Last summer, my kids and I attended an event at the library to learn about and meet live snakes. The snake expert brought several snakes from his collection for show and tell.
It was an entertaining talk, but the best part was when he brought out the various kinds of snakes he took out of black plastic bins. This was an opportunity for the audience to pet, hold, and take pictures with them.
Some rules applied: do not scream, do not pet its head, and do not look straight into its eyes. I didn’t even want to know what would happen if those rules were broken.
Anyhow, I would’ve been happy to admire and only take pictures, but my kids talked me into putting this humongous snake around my shoulders. So here I am in the picture below with my very nervous smile.

I’m sure the guy told us what kind of snake it was, but I forgot. We were told that snakes make the best pets since they are low maintenance. I’ll take his word for it! hahahaha

I was ready to dart out the door when the kids started pushing me towards the snake. It wasn’t as bad as I thought, but just the thought of a giant snake around me was freaky. Glad that I got a pic of it.

You look pretty calm, considering. Years ago, when I took kids on a field trip to OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) in Portland, we visited the snakes. Our guide said that the woman who handled the snakes was not there, so she would not take them from their habitats because she didn’t want to make them nervous. Good strategy!

Oh, how a smile can be so deceiving! hahaha The presenter told us that snakes get nervous around new people, which may be why he advised us not to startle them. Snakes are social creatures who get shy around new people.
