“Whether the Weather”: tongue-twisty poem

This tongue twisting poem is a good and fun read, especially read aloud. But the last two lines get you thinking about facing the positive and negative aspects of life’s experiences. There’s cautious optimism that whatever life brings, you’ll weather it the best you can: face good days with gratitude and smiles; face hard days with determination to overcome and rolled-up sleeves. Pensive poem.

My kids usually like poems I share with them, but this one flopped; perhaps too many “weather” words. They could’ve also tuned out because I told them it would be our language arts lesson for the day. Suddenly droopy shoulders and big yawns.

    1. Thank you! It’s a fun yet insightful poem. I love the word play of “weather” and “whether”. The sunflower picture is from a few years back at a pumpkin patch. We haven’t yet ventured out to a pumpkin patch this fall and I tentatively planned for this coming week..but it’s forecast to rain. You never know though with the weather forecast. It may be totally sunny and warm!

      2. We are getting lots of rain right now! The weather was warm for a few days and rain seemed like a far possibility.
        But it’s here and steadily pouring. We need this so badly! Thank God for this rain but also thinking about flooding in areas with wildfire scars from last year. eeek, one good thing and another bad thing. where’s the happy medium?!

    1. I’m so happy that you like the poem! The poet has a way of threading those words together and making an insightful point in a few lines. I wonder who the unknown author was and the context of its writing.

  5. Hmm – I thought all kids liked tongue twisters. But like you said – the idea was having it be in conjunction with school. Yep, school took the starch right out of your fun poem Esther!

    1. So right Linda! It could be the funnest thing but if it’s for a school lesson where we sit at a table to do it, all of a sudden they think it’s torture. With our homeschooling there’s no grading and we go at our own pace; I don’t quite understand why they feel like lessons are a chore. They say I’m scary and accuse me of yelling…this is when I use a monotone voice; to them they hear yelling. It’s hard to find a balance between mom role and teacher role.
      Maybe they’ll understand when they have their own kids one day. lol

      1. You’re right Esther – like you and I discuss sometimes that now we “get it” but hey, we were young too and it’s hard to figure grown-ups out sometimes.
