Flower of the day: July 13, 2020

Found these pretty berries near the entrance of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. My guess: seems to flower like this before leaves’ arrival.

Thanks Cee for hosting this challenge! Have a great start to a new week.

Welcome to my blog! My name is Esther and I'm so happy you are here. I'm an avid nature photographer and a daydreaming thinker. My posts revolve around photos of nature's beauty, homeschooling adventures with my 2 kids, sporadic reflections on my child's heart condition, Bible reading reflections, gardening feats, and other mish mash things. Hopefully you'll leave encouraged, pensive, or smiling at the simple things of life. Thank you for stopping by and hope you'll find some interesting posts to read!

      1. I think they are, Esther. When we went to the woody forest and saw some salmon berries, we ate them. I think they are named as such because of their color.
I buy mostly blue berries because they last longer.

  1. They look like mulberries – I see them in Council Point Park growing on big bushes. A couple of women walkers pick them and eat them right from the bush. The squirrels and groundhog also climb up and eat them. I’d not taste them knowing those critters are up there climbing and munching them, but I’m a germaphobe, so that’s why.

    1. This may shock you, but I don’t know what mulberries look like. I will have to google it. lol
I agree it’s not sanitary to just pick and eat fruits off a tree at a park. There are too many wild critters running around. If they have a strong stomach, I guess it wouldn’t hurt them much.
I’m a germaphobe too! When Ellis was born, we became so aware of germ danger. My kids know to back away from coughs and to be wary of other people’s germs. I do tell them to move away themselves and not to say it to the coughing person. They give each other the knowing eyes and back off. I guess early training for that is paying off.

      1. That is good that the kids are aware of germs. I see many kids in the store with things in their mouth, not just a finger, or a thumb, but their mother’s phone, or their mouth on the handle of the shopping cart. I could not have kids as a germaphobe, I’d be beside myself. I started being a germaphobe after I brought a bad cold home to my mom and she got very sick and couldn’t get out due to ice/snow. My mom had mobility issues in ice/snow and was scared to death she would fall after she had the second hip replacement. He used bone from the bone bank, so if she fell and broke her hip, they could not remove it like the prior one and she’d be in a wheelchair likely. Our house would have had had to be renovated as it is small and would not accommodate a wheelchair. Anyway, she never took cold meds as she was on other meds and got a cough, a rattle and I said “that doesn’t sound good” and asked the doctor to prescribe antibiotics over the phone. My mom was already on antibiotics as she had cellulitis in her lower legs, so doctor could not do that … by the time we got to the doctor, he said she was recovering from pneumonia. I vowed to never bring a cold home again. I am very very cautious in flu season and try to only go out to the store/errands when I go once a month to the allergist for my shot. I get a flu shot, but still try to stay away from stores or public places, even though my mom has been gone for 10 years now. Being careful has stuck with me. I now try to lump an “outside world trip” so that any errands are done in one day. I went this past Tuesday and my mask elastic broke and the mask fell off – I was nervous about that. We have to be masked up, but I would have gone home and got another one anyway. The Coronavirus is nothing to trifle with as you know.

      2. I forgot to say that mulberries look like blackberries only larger. I looked in my prior posts – I know I have included them but searching key words did not yield them for some reason.

      3. Wow, mulberries are bigger than blackberries? That sounds like a good kind of berry to eat. I get the frozen ones to eat with plain yogurt.
I haven’t seen mulberries at the grocery store. Maybe they have it, but I haven’t paid attention. It’s a very pretty name too.

      4. I like the frozen ones too – we have so many issues of food contamination anymore that I’m afraid to buy a lot of produce and we have Hep A issues here in Michigan – 32 people have died from Hep A (from food prep – people not washing their hands and handling food). I have not been to a restaurant in many years. I found the post – I remembered I called them black raspberries – you have to scroll down a little to find the picture. I mentioned black raspberries to a guy in the Park after I wrote the post and he said “those are mulberries” – oh. πŸ™‚ https://lindaschaubblog.net/2018/06/15/the-last-school-bell-til-fall-rang-today/
