Animals encountered in Honolulu

It was interesting to see pigeons hanging out on the sidewalk and an outdoor eating patio, minding their own business.

A school of fish and a sea turtle sighting on the glass-bottom boat tour. The viewing area you peer into from the boat. We weren’t so lucky and didn’t see anything interesting. I’m not sure why the ladder was there; maybe for staff use only. I should’ve asked!

Ducks having fun at the resort pond or fishing for food:

Rooster and Ellis at the lookout point:

Some horses at the Jurassic Park site at Kualoa Ranch for horse back riding tours. Just sightseeing since prices for some activities range in hundreds of dollars for a family of 4. But if you want to zipline, horseback ride, or have an immersive adventure of this beautiful ranch with a personal tour guide, this is the place you want to experience! The drive to this ranch is scenic and lovely.

Parrots and my kiddos at the beach:

Another random rooster on the sidewalk:

Turtle Bay Resort Beach:

Small marine snails. Google Lens identified them as Blue Periwinkle.

We saw many more chickens roaming the park, beaches, and streets, but I didn’t take pictures of all those instances. But it was fascinating to see chickens roaming wild and no one thinking that’s unusual. I hope you enjoyed the pictures of my animal sightings! When you travel, do you see animals that you wouldn’t regularly see in your community?

  2. Oh I’m so glad that you posted more pictures and stories of your family trip!

I found that picture of how people had to view into a deep hole to see the glass bottom of the boat was very odd and probably awkward. I wondered how many people were on this crew with your family? It’s hard to imagine the boat, itself.

It appears that you were quite interested in the roosters roaming freely. I do remember them and the history of why HI has ferrel roosters and chickens. Perhaps you have googled by now.

The Kualoa Ranch is a place I didn’t visit. I can understand the interest for your family.

Turtle Bay Resort and Golf Course are exquisite. The landscape is stunning! I love your photo of the marine snails. Those are smart crabs. I couldn’t find any hiding.

Yes. When I travel I do notice and give my attention to the animals that I usually do not see in my own community. I also gave much respect to the land.

Thanks so much for sharing! ❤️

    1. The Turtle Bay Resort is lovely but it was way out there from the city. The waves are rougher than the beach at the Hilton Resort. They had a large tidepool area that had lots of crevices and uneven surface. Although I’m usually the one that gets hurt, it was Ellis who fell and scraped both her knees. We left soon afterwards as she was in tears and very upset. I tried catching a crab, but they are so fast and elusive!!
The glass bottom boat is not an accurate description of what the boat is like. I thought it would be glass bottom for a large part of the boat, but those rectangular holes were in 4 different places of the boat and you just look down into them. Most of the time, it was looking for fish and dolphins from the boat and alerting the crew to stop the boat for pictures. lol. We had 2 couples on the boat and a rowdy and loud group of women taking pictures and drinking on the boat. It was entertaining to watch them have fun!
I’m so happy that you enjoyed my photos! Thank you for sharing your kind comments…makes my blogging journey that much more menaingful!

      1. I did notice the band-aides on both Ellis’s knees and wondered.

That was a big size touring boat, but I think that you are correct. It was misleading as a glass boat tour. Good, not too crowded! I always enjoy being on a boat no matter what the adventure.

      2. The E trio took Benadryl before the boat ride. Do you know that Benadryl also works as a motion sickness aid? It was Ellis’ first boat ride, so that was exciting to do as a family.

Wow, you have keen eyes! Yes, thank goodness for those big band aids. She didn’t want to get into the water after her fall, but she couldn’t resist after sitting out on the beach with me for 30 minutes.

      3. Yes, I did know that Benadryl helps with motion sickness, seasickness. I didn’t need to take it. But I suppose it was a wise thing to take if you were worried about it. It’s great that Ellis knows at least one experience of being on a boat!

Oh, I understand how those skinned knees would sting in the salt water, even with band-aides! My mom taught me to carry a small plastic bottle of meat-tenderizer for when we get stung by the jellyfish. I still cry when I fall and skin my knees. My last fall wasn’t very long ago. I landed on my face! I don’t know how long I was down there on the ground out of it. I was alone in my backyard with Yorkie. But when I came to, my face hurt for a couple of weeks and was skinned up. Too big for band-aides. But I certainly cried!

      4. We carry Benadryl with us everywhere…especially the chewable kind.
Ack, I did not think that her scrape would sting in salt water. All common sense goes out the window when you’re at the beach. I told her that salt water would cleanse the scrape…I’m glad she didn’t complain of any stinging. The band aid was very useful!!
I’m so sorry you fell on your face.. Ouch!! That’s so painful and frightening to experience., especially that helpless moment when you are falling and you don’t know how much or where you’ll get hurt. I would’ve cried too! I hope you’re skin is healing up well.

    1. You’re welcome! I’m so glad you liked the photos. It’s interesting how you ate periwinkles with salad. I wonder how that would taste! When I was little and in Korea, we used to eat them by picking out the flesh with a toothpick and dipping it in red pepper paste sauce with a splash of vinegar in it. The taste is bland but the spicy paste made it better. We dip everything in that paste. lol

    1. Thank you, Linda! There were some cats too, but my decision making takes too long. By the time I decide I want to take a photo, either the animal has left or we’re on the move. I have to be faster in deciding whether or not to take the photo or not.

      1. I come home with a lot of photos of squirrel tails as they have pretty much exited the frame already! 🙂 I’ve actually used a few of those missed shots as it made the post funny. P.S. – In today’s post, since the challenge was about pets, I included the litany of pets through the years and I included Scratch my white rabbit. I didn’t have a post of Myrtle the Turtle, nor the pair of Kissing Fish.

      2. Squirrels scramble away fast. I don’t know how you take those face front photos of your critter pals without them moving. Mine turn out blurry. I like your names for all of your pets; Myrtle the Turtle is catchy and memorable.

      3. Thank you – well, I often take the memorable squirrel poses as they anticipate their peanuts, so they are little angels. I did a post about all my pets which you’ll see when you catch up … I was happy to find a clear picture of my white rabbit. Myrtle – I wasn’t sure if it was a girl or a boy.

      4. I need to catch up with Reader big time! I’m so behind.
The squirrels know that staying still will get them their treats! And you get their undying devotion. I’ve learned that it’s hard to tell whether a rabbit is female or male, and that may require a vet to determine.

      5. You would think now that I’m retired, I’d have more time, but I was working in the house over the weekend on all the rainy days and got behind in Reader then. Then today was an errand-filled day and a quick trip to Heritage Park to check on Mrs. Goose and get pics. I didn’t know that about rabbits – I hope when I named my rabbit “Scratch” I knew – I guess that works for either male or female. I wonder where I got that name from?

      6. I’ve heard that you get busier when you retire! You got stuff to catch up on and things to do but without the 9-5 job. That’s a bonus.
Scratch was named “Scratch,” because it scratched you? We so want a bunny.

      7. Honestly, it was nice today, so I went back to get more gosling photos … I was gone for hours and didn’t get back until late this afternoon; by the time I sat down and got going, the internet was acting up, then WP was acting up. Yes, I aim to try to sit less and try to sit properly.

I don’t know why I named my bunny “Scratch” – I can’t remember if it scratched me or not. I am more inclined to believe I named it on the way home from the farm.

      8. What’s going on with the internet?! We reply so heavily on it that it acting up can be such a nuisance. I hope the internet and WP is better for you now.
Scratch is a cute name! I wonder what went through you young mind as you drove home with your new rabbit. 🙂

      9. I have to wonder what it is too Esther and I got a message that they had boosted my internet for free, yet, some days it is so slow. When I started working from home I got a higher speed internet, so this is really perplexing. And WP with its idiosyncrasies sometimes, although the last two posts I did, I can preview them again – I haven’t been able to do that in forever.
