sing like wildflowers

My full and kooky life as a homeschooling mommy to 2 great kids, raising a child with HLHS (Hypolastic Left Heart Syndrome), coping with depression, following Jesus, and being much too camera happy.

On Friday afternoons, we help our friend with some gardening chores. Her plums were ready for picking!

Elliot pulls, and Ellis retrieves the plums

The plums look lovely. They’re just ripening around here too. Nice to see the youngsters enjoying themselves being useful.

It’s great to be able to pick up fruits!!

    Best thing

I absolutely love fruit picking, those plums look so good but the oranges is where it’s at. Oranges are my favourite!

    1. DEVANG UPADHYAYA Avatar

Oranges are my 7th favorite fruit.

However never see an orange tree in real.

      1. Pooja G Avatar

        What’s your first favourite?

      2. DEVANG UPADHYAYA Avatar

        Lychee
        2nd kiwi 🥝
        3rd mangoes 🥭

Generally oranges rules the winter, I mean there are very less other fruits. People even buy kinnow in the name of oranges 😂

Rn, mangoes are ruling. We go to sabji mandi every Sunday and today couldn’t even find watermelons 😂
There are only few other fruits available in the market, mango is major ruler ( king of fruits as we say).
Plums, banana, papaya, java plum, etc.

This gives me a blog idea 💡

      3. Pooja G Avatar

Yes, right now is the time for mangoes. My uncle and his family are in India right now and my cousin was like there is foods with mango everywhere. Like raw mango, juice etc.

      4. singlikewildflowers Avatar

Mangoes are delicious and refreshing! They’re expensive in California and it’s a summer treat to have. But I must have developed an allergy to it, because it gives me stomach pains. A new thing for me. Strange how the body reacts differently over time.

      5. Pooja G Avatar

Oh wow, that’s awful. I used to have an allergy to ripe mangoes but it went away over time. I hope yours will too!

      6. singlikewildflowers Avatar

That’s hopeful! I think some allergies come and go. I wish this mango allergy will go. My lactose intolerance came back a few months ago, so maybe my system is going through a transition.

      7. Pooja G Avatar

Sorry to hear that, yeah sometimes our body needs some time before the allergies go away. Maybe when we’re not feeling our best they come back.

      8. DEVANG UPADHYAYA Avatar

        Yes
Mango Achar ( pickle), juice, shake, lassi ( sweet butter milk), these things are very common.
        Can’t see anything else.

Why don’t to come to visit your uncle, sometime? 🥺
Neighbouring state. Especially good in monsoon, ClickatripIndia

We have mango achar all year around, can;t live without it lol. I dislike ripe mango so I only eat it raw.
My uncle and aunt even asked if I wanted to come but I couldn’t due to work and stuff 😫 But one day I’ll visit for sure!

      10. DEVANG UPADHYAYA Avatar

        Good to know

        I like mango achar too….

will make more next week, It’s the hardest and time consuming to make.

      11. Pooja G Avatar

Wow, I don’t even know how to make any achar so I’m impressed.

      12. DEVANG UPADHYAYA Avatar

I know it’s the toughest. My mother was telling me yesterday. She gets annoyed, as it requires more work.

Luckily they give chopped kari( ripe mango) at extra price.

It needs a lot of oil and spices, and need to cook them seperately

        Other than this
        My mother makes
Glue berry ( lasoda ) ka achar
        Nimbu ka achar
        Jackfruit achar
Carrot( your most favorite) turnip and cauliflower achar in the season

      13. Pooja G Avatar

If you’re ever in Kenya you can teach me how to make the achar.

I like nimbu achar too, very delicious. I also like the spicy pepper achar. Mirch achar I think it’s called.

      14. DEVANG UPADHYAYA Avatar

Oh yes we do make mirch achar. It’s the easiest to make.

        Me coming to kenya, wah
Let’s see, haha. Never say never.
I’ve send 3 parcels to togo recently, but never to kenya. I wish to send something to you someday.
I have a buisness in logistics, export, air- sea cargo.

However your coming to India seems more likely, if time allows you 🙂

      15. Pooja G Avatar

You never know where life takes you, you may end up in Kenya some day.

Your business sounds very interesting. Do you only export in bulk or smaller items too?

      16. DEVANG UPADHYAYA Avatar

I export everything from document to bulk
Least would be considered as 0.5 kg ( 500 gms), max could be anything.

Sending 1 kg to Kenya would cost around 2000 ₹ 🙂
Which is not much, and I plan to use it someday 😄
We do both air and sea cargo.

Few things like cosmetics, flammable items, liquids are restricted.

I would like to visit Kenya someday.
Africa is beautiful place. I keep seeing the pics on Clickatripafrica. I’m amazed.

Do you plan to stay in africa or plan to move back to Canada?

      17. Pooja G Avatar

Oh wow, that’s interesting. Not a bad price at all. If I ever need to get anything from India I’ll let you know cos the cost isn’t bad 😊

You should definitely visit Africa, it has a lot to offer.

      18. DEVANG UPADHYAYA Avatar

Africa is definitely is in my visit list. I will for sure 😃

        Yes, let me know. 🙏🏼

Lychee is rare here. Maybe tried once or twice except last time at the market, Elliot asked if we should try lychee since he saw your comment.
That’s what Pooja said about mangoes! Nice that you got a blog idea…oh yea!

      20. DEVANG UPADHYAYA Avatar

I think lychee is possible for you

Seeing the orange trees, it won’t be hard. However takes years.

What about custard apple? Have you ever tried it? It’s a local here.

      21. singlikewildflowers Avatar

Devang, which is your 6th favorite? My first favorite is strawberries.

      22. singlikewildflowers Avatar

The orange blossoms have a fragrant scent, and these oranges we picked have a thick peel that peels off easily instead of sticking to the fruit.
I’ll try to post more pics of them, if I can get good ones. We picked the oranges from the shortest branches so now they’re all up higher in the tree. My neck!! ahhhhhhh

      23. DEVANG UPADHYAYA Avatar

        Seems like a wonderful experience
        Minus the neck ache 😢

Well atleast you guys had fun 😊

Very interesting and they look good enough to eat. I like Ellis’ new do … very grown-up looking.

    1. singlikewildflowers Avatar

Thank you, Linda! You noticed the new do.
I was the haircutter, but she’s feeling ambivalent about the length. But the consolation is that it shows her earrings better.
No pierced ears yet, just clip ons.
The oranges are juicy and plump. I haven’t tried the plums yet, although I’ve shared a lot of them with my neighbors.

It is a good cut for Summer in the heat and will grow back by the time Fall is here … I have been cutting my hair since the pandemic began … I used to have long layers and don’t know how to do that, so cut it straight on the bottom … I am still trying to avoid going to a hair salon as you’d have to remove your mask. I didn’t get pierced ears until I was a teenager. When we moved here, the elderly couple two doors down had peach and plum trees. They told us to take what we wanted, so my father would pick them and my mom would make cobblers, kuchens and pies and send them some.

    Mmm, plum jam . . .

    1. singlikewildflowers Avatar

True! I could make plum jam. I didn’t even think of that possibility. Since I didn’t grow up making jam, it doesn’t cross my mind to delve into that sort of preserving fruits. Thanks for the suggestion!

      1. Liz Gauffreau Avatar

        You’re welcome!

Nothing like picking fruit! So fun!
