It was at the fish section at a large Korean grocery store bear SF!
That is an enormous head! and a huge price tag to boot! Fish head curry is a thing in Singapore, but I can’t imagine many people would be snatching it up in SF!
I can’t imagine people getting in line to buy this head! What could they make with it? I wouldn’t want to bring that home with me. lol
My dad loves fish head best! My mother steams it for him, or braises it with mirin and soy sauce. But I hear you, I can’t imagine many folks in SF wanting the fish head! (maybe my uncle and cousins!)
I think so…it may be more appetizing for older generations!
Oh my goodness – why such a large price for just the tuna’s head? The tuna head rising out of the ice, looks like “Jaws” coming out of the water.
It got our attention right away! I’ve never seen anything like that before. I wonder how it’s cooked or eaten. Yes, it is expensive for that head. But it’s a great conversation starter. lol
I have only been to a fish market a few times in my life – never have I seen that before and I’d be taken aback seeing it. Yes, a great conversation starter for sure. My father was German and a few times when I was younger, I went with them to the New Year’s Party at the German Club. The featured food was whole pigs with an apple stuffed into their mouth – not a fan of that and steered clear of looking at it and eating it too. Same with my mom – she was not brought up to eat that but she visited her grandparents farm many times and said for Sunday dinner, her grandfather went to the barnyard and got fresh chickens for dinner and it would be upsetting to her knowing that.
Oh yikes! Korea also serves pig heads in Korea on some special occasions. When we went to a Luau in Hawaii, a whole pig was roasted in a pit and they have a ceremony where the pig is carried is on a large tray by guys holding each end of the cot’s 4 sides. I don’t think I articulated that well for easy visualization.
I guess for special occasions or if is native to the country would be more normal, but I could not, at my age (maybe preteen) see how it pertained to German culture and was a little freaked out how it looked. Did it bother you to see that pig’s head Esther? At the German event, there was an apple in the pig’s mouth (maybe to prop it open?)
I’ve seen it before, so it didn’t bother me much! The shock factor wasn’t there. But if it was a different animal, I may have been turned off. I just read that placing an apple in the pig’s mouth is to make it look happy. Here is the link if you are interested!

Thanks for that link Esther – that was interesting. I never thought of the pork/apple connection before. We always had applesauce with our porkchops. I can’t say I ever saw the remnants of the pig at this event – did I just not go near it? Or was the pig just for show? I don’t believe that.

Remember when we used to look up things in the encyclopedia?
Yes, what a bother it was to do that! Remember when we had to use a dictionary to find out how to spell a word? Sometimes it was difficult to know how to begin looking for a word phonetically.
It took a lot of time and patience. It’s hard to imagine how we searched for information back then.
I wonder if all our hard work helped us to retain that info better …
But why is it so hard to memorize phone numbers??
Yes, that’s true. Our brains need more RAM memory years ago when we bought memory sticks for our hard drives. 🙂
