My full and kooky life as a homeschooling mommy to 2 great kids, raising a child with HLHS (Hypolastic Left Heart Syndrome), coping with depression, following Jesus, and being much too camera happy.

It was time to fix our home printer. The black and white prints were printing well, but the color prints have been acting ghastly for 2 years: with white horizontal bands shown on the colored parts of the paper and colors looking faded and nothing like the color it was supposed to be. The ink nozzle wouldn’t even take the ink. Chris told me that I needed to clean out the nozzle with some kind of solution and a syringe. Well, that’s been on his radar for over a year, and I was that close to chucking it when school started this year. But my confidence in fixing things got a kickstart 2 weeks ago after I repaired our vacuum cleaner that was pulsing on and off.

I watched many YouTube videos and tinkered around with the filter and finally fixed it. The whole process took me 1 hour. I was so proud of my success that I was showing off to my family and told them I would fix the printer next. I ordered the cleaning kit from Amazon and watched multiple videos. The surprising thing I discovered was the number of printer repair videos online. It must be a common issue that people struggle with!

The process for fixing the printer took about 2 hours, which created a lot of mess with the solution flushing out the clogs in the nozzles. Everyone left me alone during this time since they could see me getting more irritated with each new video I had to watch. The repair involved cleaning the nozzles, realigning the text, printing out test prints with each realignment, and running the cleaning function on the printer. Half way through it I was losing hope that this would ever print vibrant colors.

Here is the process:

I printed a colorful Pokemon image a number of tries to see if the white lines would disappear. It took 5 tries for it to work!

Overall, these experiences were challenging but rewarding! I don’t want to fix anything else for some time though; that was enough for me. Have you fixed anything that you are proud of?

I know that I went through the same process with my last printer: or maybe with this one. Good for you, for sorting it out! My last repair was a broken flow control on my hose nozzle. It was a clean break that clearly could be fixed with superglue, and the glue did work. Unfortunately, it had been so long since I’d used superglue I’d forgotten it was capable of gluing fingers together. Whoops! It took longer to separate my fingers than to fix the nozzle.

I can’t think of anything I’ve fixed and been proud of recently, but I find the YouTube videos much more helpful than any instructions you get – half the time you don’t even get instructions, just a website to go to. It’s been ages since I’ve fixed a printer that was broken and that was at work. I never used a printer when I worked for Robb – I’d be in the poorhouse as much as he revised everything. Kudos to you Esther!
