This cyclic vomiting bout started on Monday around 11 a.m. and ended Wednesday around 6 p.m . It took experimenting with 4 anti nausea medications to abort the episode. I always stay alert to the ‘perk up’ moment, when she begins to look comfortable, starts to talk, asks for her phone, and is interested in eating food. Before that, she is a completely different person, uninterested and constantly deep breathing. Because she refused to talk the first 3 days, nurses and doctors asked if she was nonverbal and if she ate by mouth. I become her mouthpiece and voice, taking cues from her eyes and body language.
We are so grateful it’s over. However, she’s overly tearful and emotional from the side effect of one of her anti-nausea medications: we stopped this medication for this reason a few months ago, but we were desperate and needed to try it again this time. The doctor said this medication inhibits emotional regulation and something about calming the system so that the nausea doesn’t go overboard. It sounded so good when she talked about it scientifically, but this tired brain can’t recall all of it.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts, comments, prayers, and encouragements!! They helped us so much in feeling less lonely and seen.

Sorry, Esther, that Ellis went through another episode of vomiting and hospitalization. I hope she’ll rest well at home and feel better and better.
Thank you, Miriam! These episodes are exhausting for all of us, but it’s the worst for Ellis to experience all that nausea, throwing up, and retching. She’s been doing well at home; sleeping, resting, eating, and doing her own thing.
You surely are all going through the mill. So sorry, Esther xx
Thank you, Jo! We made it out well again and the doctors made an adjustment to her daily medications, so hopefully that will curb future events. She takes an anti-nausea medication daily but it seems that the dosage was too low since she got it last year. Ack! Oh well…
I guess as she grows the medication will need to be increased, unless she grows out of it. Wouldn’t that be a miracle? Sending hugs xx
It would be a miracle! What amazes me is the tweaking of medication and its dosages; kind of like an art form.
Thank you for the hugs!!
I found myself wondering if she had any episodes on your recent vacation. If not, I wonder if there’s something in her home environment that triggers it (not your house, but the surrounding environment). Anyway: she’s home now, thank goodness.
And look at those raccoons! What fun. Did she enjoy seeing them?
She’s had many bouts of pre-cyclic vomiting episodes and we’ve been able to use her rescue med to curb them from spiraling into these episodes. They happen around every 6 weeks, and it keeps me on my toes because she needs the medication right away. However, it’s hard to distinguish it from regular sickness from the cyclic vomiting. Her triggers are tiredness and anxiety.
She wasn’t doing well from last Saturday when we went to the rabbit show, and I should’ve realized it on Sunday when she was looking pale and weak. I thought it was just a cold she was recovering from. It’s very confusing to discern each time and the self-doubt goes into overdrive.
The raccoons were a treat on our evening stroll. They really cheered us up!

I’m glad it’s over and you can go home and rest. Whew 😅
You’re right, whew! It was a big sigh of relief and I just wanted to sleep in my own bed. The daybed is hard and all the beeping sounds don’t make for a good night sleep.
What a relief that this latest bout is over!!
Amen! It was a relief and there’s nothing like going down to garage and getting into the car ready to go home.
Thankfully, Ellis is feeling better and able to go home, so you can both rest in your own beds.
So relieved! I always make sure to wipe down the suitcase and its wheels with clorox when we get home. Everything goes in the wash.
Yes, you can almost see the germs clinging as you walk through the corridors and out the door. Thank goodness you missed the peak of flu season – whew for that!
What a week it must have been for you all! I am sorry I am only catching up with you now. I am so glad that Ellis is well enough to return home. Now to catch up on your sleep. Praying for Ellis to recover her strength. Hugs to you!
Thank you, Ju-Lyn! It was a crazy week but we made it home in one piece and together. I’m so thankful to God for doctors, nurses, and medicine that help her through these episodes. Sleep has been wonderful for both of us and we appreciate sleeping in our own comfortable beds! Hugs received! Thank you.
Sending love and support, glad she’s home ❤️
