My full and kooky life as a homeschooling mommy to 2 great kids, raising a child with HLHS (Hypolastic Left Heart Syndrome), coping with depression, following Jesus, and being much too camera happy.

Recently, our beloved Dart had some medical drama! Last Wednesday, out of nowhere, Dart’s tail developed a red, dry, and inflamed tail. The redness was around the middle area of its tail too.

At this sight, the E-trio freaked out instantly! Elliot had read about leopard geckos getting tail rot and the redness looked similar to it. We instantly assumed it was tail rot and thought the worst was going to happen to Dart.

It took me a day to decide what to do since Ellis was feeling sick and took her rescue med for 2 days in a row. I couldn’t make an appointment for Dart in case we had to go to the ER. It was mental overwork for me.

This whole time Elliot was coping but he cried, more like weep, two times over Dart. He was upset with himself and us that Dart was not getting as much attention as Teddy and he was upset that we had to leave a musical show early because Ellis was getting chills and developing a fever on Wednesday night. I understand how tough it must be for him to be at the whim of his sister’s condition. But it was a proud moment for this mama to see how he didn’t take it his anger or frustration on anyone. We talked about it later and he confessed that it took a lot out of him to control his emotions.

I digress. Ellis was feeling better by the next morning so I made an appointment for Dart that Thursday afternoon. When I asked Gemini how much a tail amputation might cost, it gave an estimate of $800-$1000 for the exotic vets in our area. I sighed and gulped a bit. Elliot and I made a compromise that we’d settle for a lesser amount or else we’d have to euthanize. He agreed. I told Chris that we were heading out for the appointment, and he told us to wait since he was 3 minutes away from home. I initially thought he was so thoughtful to go with us, but he smirked and said he wanted to preclude us from making bad financial decisions!!

Dart was seen by the vet and he did a quick examination of Dart’s tail. Thankfully, it wasn’t tail rot. It was a bacterial infection from a cricket’s bite! Dart is a clueless hunter and will only eat when a cricket or mealworm is dangling in front of its face on a metal tong. So a cricket might have been accidentally dropped and forgotten in the terrarium. Well, that cricket was determined to seek revenge and bit its predator in the tail.

On the drive to the vet’s office, Chris had set our budget to $200 and I thought that was enough budget to euthanize him. A tail amputation? Forget it. That’s probably way out of budget. But God was so good to us and Dart!! The tail treatment came up to $204 and I declined the $400 blood test. The vet said that he would clamp the tail and that would make Dart release its tail. It was a 3-5 second procedure and its tail was flopping around by itself.

I brought the tail home as a souvenir! Dart is now on antibiotics for 2 weeks and gets a betaiodine soak every night till the open wound seals and scabs.

Big news! Dart is a female. So we gave her a feminine middle name “Darcie.”

Dart has been the center of attention at home since last Wednesday and her tail drama has challenged us as pet owners. She only weighs 55 grams but she is a a beloved member of our family. I am so thankful to God that her vet bill was reasonable and that she is on the mend. It’s been a growing experience for all of us!

Oh so glad it was something easily remedied!

So glad that Ellis is feeling better. It is good to see Dart too. 😊

It’s great that Dart’s problem was remedied relative easily (and without breaking the bank). What fun to discover that you have a she rather than a he; I like the name revision. And of course it was fun to see her smiling face again!

Whoa. That was an awful lot of drama. I’m relieved that your family, including Darcie, came through everything relatively unscathed (except for the tail!).

My goodness! You had a rough couple of days! 🙏❤️ I’m so glad everything worked out okay! 😅
Vets can be insanely expensive. I was going to put down one of our cats and the vet was giving us So Much pressure to try all the super expensive surgeries, overnight pet ER, etc. I was in tears – he made me feel absolutely horrible because I wouldn’t do any of those things. He finally suggested a reasonably priced injection of intervenous fluid, but said that she would probably die if I didn’t do the expensive treatments. We took her home and she was back to normal in two days. 🤨

Thank you! We are relieved the whole ordeal is behind us. The potential cost of the vet price scared us and I had no idea what treatment the vet would suggest. It stressed me out so much. Thankfully, it was a minor one. But if I opted for the blood test analysis, that would cost an extra $400-500. I’m sorry you had that traumatic experience. It’s hard enough when your pet is sick but to have to deal with judgement and considering the financial cost on top in the midst of a pet sickness is awful. Your cat showed the vet!! So happy to hear that iv fluids did the trick. You guys must’ve been worried sick while waiting.

    PS
You all look so nice dressed up for Les Mis! I have a skirt similar to yours. I am going to wear it out to dinner tonight. I’d kind of forgotten about it. 🥰

Thank you! We were all looking forward to getting dressed up and wanted to be fancy that night. Wished we could’ve stayed till the end, but it was still a good night.
We have similar taste in clothes! I hope you wore the skirt out to dinner and had a wonderful time.

That was quite an ordeal for Dart and his loved ones! That was a first for you after all the live crickets you feed him with. I hope this was the first and last time or maybe you have to come up with another treat and he likes crickets, so maybe not? Everyone looks happy at the Les Mis production!

Yes, it was a terrible ordeal for us! Elliot was in emotional shambles and I felt horrible worrying about the vet cost, but reality is reality.
We got one naughty cricket this time. It wasn’t playing games. Dart is a slow and lazy eater, so feeding her is a laborious. She seems interested and will look towards her bug amd them turn away instantly. We douse the bug in vitamins si she can at least lick the vitamin and get some nutrients in her.
The Les Mis was our first musical and it was a great production. We all got dressed up for it. Sadly, we had to leave after intermission. Ellis got chills and her hands were shaking. She told us that she could probably hold out till the end but we would have consequences! We left and the ushers gave us funny looks. Lol. Positive note: we beat the traffic and no er trip.

Hmm – can you kind of squish the cricket in the tweezers so it’s still alive and kicking but can’t bite Dart? I remember you said it had to be live crickets and mealworms. Yikes, what an ordeal but at least you found out Dart was a girl in the process. Well, that was unfortunate as to the Les Mis performance. But, better to be safe than sorry and yes you beat the rush. I have only seen one live play myself when I visited New York – it was “Same Time Next Year” which was also a movie.
