My full and kooky life as a homeschooling mommy to 2 great kids, raising a child with HLHS (Hypolastic Left Heart Syndrome), coping with depression, following Jesus, and being much too camera happy.

Right before I published this post, I got a call from my mom’s doctor at the hospital with good news. Tomorrow at 2 p.m she will get surgery to remove her pelvic mass! We’ve all been frantically waiting for this procedure since June, which had to be postponed to initially address her heart issues.

Going back to my initial post below:

Again, my mom is back in the hospital since last Saturday. She had blood in her urine all day and by nightime she was feeling weak and vomiting. My dad called me at night panicking if he should call 911 for my mom Saturday night.

The problem has been with a large pelvic mass that is causing her recurring UTI infections. She’s been taking antibiotics so frequently that she has developed a tolerance to it. Only IV antibiotics seem to work. In the midst of all this in June and July, she had 2 angiograms to clear the calcified blockages in her right and left artery. She now has heart failure. I would’ve freaked out but I went through this with conversation with Ellis two years ago. Strangely, I  was immune to the shock.

Being on call for my mom all week has taxed me physically, emotionally, and mentally. Her English isn’t fluent but she can still communicate and understand. However, when she’s panicked she seems to lose all ability to communicate and starts rambling. She called me at 2:30 a.m. wondering why they moved her to another room and that she was scared and cold. I woke up alarmed and panicked thinking she had lost her mind. It’s rare…almost never that she calls me in the middle of the night. Nurse reassured me that she was moved to the general patient room because her condition stabilized.

In the past couple of days, doctors have done multiple imaging scans and labs to determine the root cause of this. She has a 3×4″ cyst on her right pelvic area, which pushes down on her bladder.

On Wednesday, the internal doctor told me that they are waiting to consult with a gynecologist/ oncologist to determine if the cyst is just a fluid filled sac or a tumor (benign or malignant). After that phone call, my affect was flat for about an hour. I  had no desire to talk or engage with anyone as I sat at the table processing the information.

The doctor told me that this was to rule out any chances of it being cancer. I heard the word “cancer” and just metaphorically dropped to the floor in my mind. Reassuring is that her blood test for tumor markers came back negative.

She’s still in the hospital awaiting next steps. Using a catheter is helping her to have less strain going to the restroom every 30 minutes and giving her extended time to comfortably sleep at night: something she was deprived of for months.

Funny thing is how I feel guilty for being well and taking my kids out for summer outings and going out. I feel torn. In one recess of my heart, I feel pain for my mom: in the other part, I want to have summer experiences with my family and friends before the school year starts. I am present in whatever I’m doing but you’ll hear me heaving a deep sigh here and there. The guilt of being happy weighs me down. I feel that I should be miserable to commiserate but that wouldn’t be beneficial to anyone except gratifying my self inflicted guilt upon myself.

I’ve been praying for discerninment and strength to hold this tension well. It’s a lesson in learning and growing. I don’t care for this refining process much, but God is doing something in me.

Out with friends on Saturday…3 hours later I’d have to go home to field all the hospital phone calls

It was so good to see that “pre-script” at the top of your post. I hope all goes well, and that your mom’s physical condition improves — as well as your mental/emotional condition! Ongoing issues of any sort really can drain us, whether medical, financial, relational, etc. etc. Good luck!

It was a long week!! So much happening in the span of a day and my mom complaining of pain and discomfort while the doctors are figuring out what to do. The waiting was the worst. Yep, I agree with you that “ongoing issues” can drain a person in so many ways. I felt that way but also trying to be filled up to be present with m family and be a good mom and wife. Thank you for your well wishes!

I’m glad your mother is being well taken care of. I think your mixed feelings are perfectly natural.

Thank you! I’m so relieved that my mom’s brother has been visiting her with food every night and my dad visits her during the day. Today she was recovering from her surgery and experiencing a lot of soreness from the incision on her lower belly. But she sounded well and she doesn’t have that constant bathroom issue and pain. I had the surgeon send me a photo of the pelvic mass removed and it was pretty big. It was shocking what a clean cut he made to it.
Thank you for your affirmation about those conflicting tensions I’ve been feeling. I knew it was a common feeling among caretakers but experiencing it for myself made it real.

You’re welcome, Esther! My mother was caregiver for my dad after he was brain-damaged following heart failure.

Oh my! Caregiving is such a difficult job to undertake and emotionally hard too. That’s beautiful how she cared for him.

She gave him a quality of life unheard of for anyone with his medical condition. She kept him out of a nursing home for seven years, except for the last month of his life.

Your mom’s devotion to your dad and care for him with his medical condition were a beautiful testament of love and commitment!!

Yes, I’m forever grateful for what she did for him.

It is tough when a loved one is hospitalised, so much more when it is a parent! I can’t even imagine the language barriers and the anxiety of managing all this remotely.

Praying for the surgery, and your Mom’s recovery and recuperation. For strength, wisdom and endurance for you. For Him to send support and comfort from all quarters to uplift and encourage you.

It’s been rough this summer with the constant phone calls and conveying information! It was made more miserable because my mom was sick and my dad’s eyesight was failing. At one point, it felt hopeless. But God is good and I had to turn over everything to Him, because there is nothing I could do except do what I was doing.
Thank you for your prayers and for your encouragement! Always a pleasure to hear from you.

I hope all goes well with your mom Esther. I have kept her, your dad and your other family members (even Dart and Teddy) in my daily prayers. You are strong for everyone and how you hold it all together is a miracle in my opinion. Please remember to take care of YOU too so your bout with shingles goes away.

Thank you, Linda! I so appreciate your continued prayers for my family and pets too. I am amazed that we made it through this summer without any big hiccups or hospitalizations for Ellis. The shingles bout taught me a lot about taking care of myself and to take it easy. Can you believe school starts tomorrow?! Our charter school begins with testing to evaluate where kids are at the beginning of the academic year…this week is mellow in that regards.

I hope my prayers from afar are helping for your family and pets. Thank goodness Ellis has been feeling fine and at home – you didn’t need an ER visit or two to add to your plate. I hate to hear your Summer is now over but at least it is not full days and heavy-duty homework already. We had a few schools start here too. When I was young, everyone, kindergarten to college, started school the day after Labor Day.

They help immensely and I am so thankful that you remember to pray for us all!!! Hugs!!

Yes, every day and I will continue Esther … you are always in my thoughts and prayers.
