Happy National “Peace” Rose Day! Until yesterday I had no idea that there was such a day for a certain type of rose, but there is. Thanks to my good friend Linda from Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy for sharing this information with me! You keep me posted me on different types of national days and introduce me to new flowers. Its history is profound and beautiful!
This hybrid rose was originally developed in France by a horticulturalist named Francis Meilland over a period of four years, 1935-1949. However, when German invasion against France seemed imminent, he sent cuttings to friends in different parts of the world to preserve it. They were successfully propagated, and especially in the U.S. by a horticultural company in Pennsylvania called Conard Pyle Co during WWII. It became a favorite garden rose that was strong and disease-resistant. In 1945, Meilland asked Field Marshall Alan Brooke (played prominent role in liberating France) if the rose could be named after him. Instead Brooke asked that it be named “Peace” instead. “Peace” became official when it was introduced as a trade name by Conard Pyle Co. Learning this story has deepened my appreciation for this kind of rose. It has a special story with real people working to preserve its beauty.
I’m not sure if this is a “Peace” rose, but according to its description, it just may be. Large cream petals with pink edges, although there’s quite a variety of them.

Esther – First of all, thank you for the shout-out and I am happy to share what little tidbits I come across with you. I was sure, with all the beautiful flowers I have seen in the short time I’ve followed you, that you had a Peace Rose in your Pictures Folder. That was an interesting history on this rose. It certainly deserves to be a beautiful rose, given all that rich history and its attributes.

I was surprised by the Peace rose history too. That rose type has gone through a dramatic first to survive and now it’s become a favorite garden and cut type rose. There was this peace rose very close to our close and so I had to go outside and take it yesterday.

You have probably seen them around already! It’s supposed to grow without issues and is a “vigorous” flower. But its thorns are large…kind of scary to think that a delicate flower has those thorns.
You may be able to find it at Lowes or Home Depot. Let me know if you find it! You’ll get beautiful blooms.

It’s so true. I have several rose bushes with thick thorns. There are poems written about that!!
