Happy National “Peace” Rose Day! Until yesterday I had no idea that there was such a day for a certain type of rose, but there is. Thanks to my good friend Linda from Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy for sharing this information with me! You keep me posted me on different types of national days and introduce me to new flowers. Its history is profound and beautiful!
This hybrid rose was originally developed in France by a horticulturalist named Francis Meilland over a period of four years, 1935-1949. However, when German invasion against France seemed imminent, he sent cuttings to friends in different parts of the world to preserve it. They were successfully propagated, and especially in the U.S. by a horticultural company in Pennsylvania called Conard Pyle Co during WWII. It became a favorite garden rose that was strong and disease-resistant. In 1945, Meilland asked Field Marshall Alan Brooke (played prominent role in liberating France) if the rose could be named after him. Instead Brooke asked that it be named “Peace” instead. “Peace” became official when it was introduced as a trade name by Conard Pyle Co. That happened on April 29, 1945; the day the Berlin wall fell, marking a climactic event in World War II. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosa_Peace)
“We hope the ‘Peace’ rose will influence men’s thoughts for everlasting world peace.” Inaugural note to delegates at United Nations, San Francisco
Learning this story has deepened my appreciation for this kind of rose. It has a special story with real people working to preserve its beauty.
I’m not sure if this is a “Peace” rose, but according to its description, it just may be. Large cream petals with pink edges, although there’s quite a variety of them.

Also, thanks Cee for hosting this flower challenge! Learning lots along the way.

Beautiful capture and it’s always nice to know the history behind things. I trust that you’re well, my friend. Take care.
Thank you so much! Flowers are in full bloom these days. Kind of limited to the flowers in my neighborhood…I can just imagine how pretty they must be out of the city.
Hope you are doing well, and yes, I’m hanging in there doing my thing. Ups and downs but overall ok. Thanks you friend for saying hello and checking in!
You’re welcome! They surely are and I’ve been having a blast taking in their beauty. I’m doing well by God’s grace and I’m glad that you’re holding onto Him no matter what. Take care, my friend. 💙💙
Esther – First of all, thank you for the shout-out and I am happy to share what little tidbits I come across with you. I was sure, with all the beautiful flowers I have seen in the short time I’ve followed you, that you had a Peace Rose in your Pictures Folder. That was an interesting history on this rose. It certainly deserves to be a beautiful rose, given all that rich history and its attributes.
My pleasure! I’m happy to give credit to you. I have a weakness for pretty flowers and have taken pictures of them for years. I had no idea what to do with them, and I finally found a forum for it.
I was surprised by the Peace rose history too. That rose type has gone through a dramatic first to survive and now it’s become a favorite garden and cut type rose. There was this peace rose very close to our close and so I had to go outside and take it yesterday.
Thanks again for thinking to share with me!!
You are so welcome Esther.
Wonderful roses for today 😀
Thank you!
I didn’t know of this kind of roses either. I must see if it’s available at Lowes or Home Depot. 😊
You have probably seen them around already! It’s supposed to grow without issues and is a “vigorous” flower. But its thorns are large…kind of scary to think that a delicate flower has those thorns.
You may be able to find it at Lowes or Home Depot. Let me know if you find it! You’ll get beautiful blooms.
Have a great weekend and take care!
It’s so true. I have several rose bushes with thick thorns. There are poems written about that!!
That’s what makes roses special and unique! Those poems sound interesting. I will have to look it up. They’ll be interesting poems to read.
Do you like poems?
I do like poems! It’s hard to understand some and I realize it takes time to read them. Lately I’ve become more of a fan. Who are your favorite poets?
I like Robert Frost and Linda Pastan. Linda Pastan is an American poet.
I published a poetry book.
You published a poetry book!! I checked on Amazon and there it is. It’s in my cart. Once I find other items to put in my cart for one shipment (which won’t be hard to do), I’ll get it.
Linda Pastan is a new name for me. Thanks for letting me know! There’s so many talented poets and writers out there!
Linda Pastan is a contemporary poet and she is still alive, considering many famous ones are dead!
Thank you for thinking about me and getting my poetry book. I appreciate that. There are two versions of paperback, one in black and white and one in color because I used many photos in the book!
It’s always good to learn about poets who are still alive! Gotta appreciate them while they are alive. Many famous ones are dead and it seems they get famous once they pass.
Yes, looking forward to reading your book of poems! I don’t see the option to choose either version. I will look into it more but I will be happy with whichever version is sent.
Have a good night and take care! So exciting to make the acquaintance of a poet. 🙂
If you click the eBook, after that you click paperback, it may give you the B&W version. It showed $8.04, I Don’t know why, because when you check out, it’ll give you the original $8.99.
Thank you again for thinking about getting it. I bought a children’s book for my granddaughter and waited for more things to add up to $25 so I didn’t have to pay for the shipping. The second thing ended up arriving first!!
Ok, I’ll try your suggestion about the version choice. I just ordered a bunch of stuff from Amazon on Sunday, so I’m thinking of what else we need. I can always think of something! 🙂
I love it when the shipment comes faster than expected. It’s so fun to get packages.
