I used to plant sunflowers. This year I was too busy to plant milkweed and other flowers for butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees.

How did your milkweeds turn out?
My friend told me that her milkweed plants have an awful number of caterpillars on them. I wish I had that problem!!
Thank you. Sunflowers are beautiful the way they look up at the sun and with their thick stems. We usually go to a pumpkin patch in autumn that has a whole field of them.
I raised 20 butterflies. I had more caterpillars, but didn’t have enough milkweed to feed them. Hopefully I can raise me much year.
The sunflowers are cheerful. The finch birds love to eat the leaves and seeds. I wait until they’re fine eating before cutting down the plants.
My daughter goes to the pumpkin patch every year.
That’s a whole lot of butterflies you raised! Must’ve felt gratifying to see them morph. They must really go through the milkweeds.
Now you know; maybe next year you’ll double the butterfly count. No pressure of course. Just thinking out loud here and I need to get me some milkweed plants!!! Kids would love to see this process naturally instead of us buying the caterpillars from a nature shop.
Did I mention that the second butterfly to leave the netted habitat this summer got eaten by a bird about 2 seconds it flew away from our porch. It happened in a blink. You can imagine kids were in tears. Freedom cut short by a hungry bird.

I just took some photos of sunflowers in a garden in the ‘hood. They were orange striped. Saturday I took some tall sunflower shots at the Park (it’s right in the neighborhood).
It’s time for sunflowers!! I don’t think I’ve ever seen an orange striped one before.
When I’m on the road, I sometimes see tall and big sunflowers that reach the top of some single-story homes. Fascinating!
I did grow a Russian Mammoth Sunflower on year and it was as tall as the neighbor’s garage. I looked at those sunflower pics this afternoon – I’ll probably use them for Wordless Wednesday a week from Wednesday. They are not black seeds in the center yet – I have two sets of photos from two places. Lots of bees in them. The orange stripes ones are really unusual looking.
You need to post those Sunflower pictures! They lived up to the Mammoth name.
I’m glad I’m not the only one taking pictures of them daily. I will admit that I’ll even examine them in the a.m. and p.m. just to see if there are any changes. I’m so excited about my pandemic babies!!!!!!! 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
