My full and kooky life as a homeschooling mommy to 2 great kids, raising a child with HLHS (Hypolastic Left Heart Syndrome), coping with depression, following Jesus, and being much too camera happy.
Welcome to my blog! My name is Esther and I’m so happy you are here. I’m an avid nature photographer and a daydreaming thinker. My posts revolve around photos of nature’s beauty, homeschooling adventures with my 2 kids, sporadic reflections on my child’s heart condition, Bible reading reflections, gardening feats, and other mish mash things. Hopefully you’ll leave encouraged, pensive, or smiling at the simple things of life. Thank you for stopping by and hope you’ll find some interesting posts to read!
Got a new batch of 25 crickets for this week’s gecko’s meals from PetSmart. This is the first time adding a slice of apple with an ice cube: usually, it’s a piece of lettuce and a carrot stick, which get demolished in days. Feeding the feeder crickets is called gut loading: what the crickets eat will be nutritious for the pet eating those crickets. Seems cruel, but this darn food chain!Last week’s batch of crickets eating romaine lettuce. New pieces of lettuce are added as needed.
You are a braver woman than I. First there would be no lizard in the house, but their food supply is whole different matter. Glad my boys were more into being outside where they could play with the crickets and mama didn’t have to. LOL.
Thanks, Anita! I did not know that I would actually think a gecko is cute and buy live crickets to feed it. But the process hasn’t been as awful as I imagined. My kiddos tell me that our gecko needs some special roaches for its diet; that one I’m skeptical about getting. For now, I’m okay with live crickets, freeze-dried mealworms, calcium powder, and multivitamin powder. I think this gecko eats a more balanced nutritional meal than me. lol
Playing outside is the best though!
Even if they do, we can’t hear it! They don’t make much of a fuss. I thought they’d jump out of the critter box, but they don’t jump high; probably because they are used to jumping in small spaces. I speak too soon though!! What if one jumps out tomorrow?!
That’s good – whew! One night a few years ago I had a cricket “singing” the entire evening. It was in the living room, but how it got there I have no idea and it stopped suddenly and I never heard it again – creepy!
For a gecko pet, it’s not recommended to feed bugs found found outside, because it might introduce parasites. And the gecko lives in your house, so that becomes kind of tricky.
I think if they live in the wild, they will eat all kinds of insects, but as a pet, it only eats what we feed it.
hahaha, Dart may like India! He will eat like a king and keep down the bug population. Win win.
Well now I understand that why gecko is not a pet option in India.
Because here we have no such food options. Like the food dart is eating is special. The insects are kept seperated from regular insects.
Best wishes to Dart 🎯🐲
People breed crickets and sell them to pet stores. I heard it’s a very smelly endeavor. The pet store here sells frozen mice for snake pets. They come in a package similar to a soap box. I think a snake pet might be cool but the diet is just to much for me!! I can’t share a freezer with a frozen mice. Heck no.
Dart thanks you for his kind thoughts and aspires to be a Charizard now. hahahaha

Oh my! Do they chirp at night while in their cricket digs?

I was about to say that
You can feed them to dart.
But well, I didn’t know you get them for purpose.
Here we have a lot of bugs, ants and what not. Dart will live like a king.
Does he also eat termites?
I’ve seen chameleon eating them..

He can be whatever he wants to be!!
We are also part of that chain, can’t rue it that much.
Fascinating!
Crickets go to town on apple slice, lettuce, and carrots!!
