sing like wildflowers

My full and kooky life as a homeschooling mommy to 2 great kids, raising a child with HLHS (Hypolastic Left Heart Syndrome), coping with depression, following Jesus, and being much too camera happy.

He turns and stays ghostly white for hours before he sheds. It’s the final step. Before turning white, his skin turns darker and extremely dry.
Shedding. He begins the peeling process by rubbing his face against a hard surface, pulls away the shed with his mouth, and eats it for nutrition.
The last bit of shed that he couldn’t get with his mouth. Kiddos peeled it off his leg.
Close-up of the shed.

Thank you! Dart is teaching us so much about reptile care and it’s fun to share what we learn with you. We’re more used to him shedding now, but we used to stress out now knowing why he was changing colors and acting weird. We thought he was getting sick. 🤔
      Have a wonderful weekend.

I had no idea geckos did this until we got our own. It’s an interesting process to see and it’s amazing to see. He eats his whole shed, but preparing to shed is a difficult process for him. He gets very tired, doesn’t poop, and sleeps all day. His body must be preparing him for the stressful shedding process.
My name is Esther and I’m a full time homeschooling mom to my kiddos. My husband is a scientist.

Amazing photography! That shot of its hand shedding is exquisite!! Its shedded layer shows its bumps.

Does Darling Dart go into his humidifier by himself when it is ready? ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🦎

Thank you, TD! It’s fascinating when he sheds. Last night he needed assistance when his body shed was pulling his mouth like a mouth harness. The toes too… if it’s not completely shed, it can cut blood circulation to that area.
He instinctively knows, and yes, he’ll stay in his moist hide most of the time. We also mist him and the tank with a water spray bottle. For days before shedding, he gets lethargic and doesn’t poop either. It must take a lot out of him.
We’ll let Darling Dart know that Auntie TD have him thumbs up for shedding!!
      Have a great weekend. 👍

All so very interesting. You and your children also get a thumbs up for taking such good care of him.

Yes. We are having a very nice weekend because a mild cold front came in yesterday into low 70s and today we are getting another cold front which might drop our temperature into low 60s. Delightful!

        Enjoy your weekend as well.

Thank you! It’s a fun and educational journey for all of us. They’ve wanted a pretty for so long that they could interact with, so Dart is a much beloved member of our family.
Where do you live? That sounds like great autumn weather. In CA, we are having a some serious heat. Yesterday was 97 and today is 95. We also had a half hour of power outage last night. So thankful it didn’t turn into a longer one. The first thing I regretted was not making more coffee. Lol.

I live in Corpus Christi Texas a mile from the Corpus Christi Bay close to the Gulf of Mexico. We often have power outages. Coffee a must!

We have had such serious heat up to 112 and 100 all through August. So we are getting Fall weather relief now.

I’m so happy that your family adopted into your family Darling Dart! It’s my pleasure to watch and learn with you!! ❤️🦎

Yes, I heard that this summer in Texas was unbearably hot!! Thank goodness, fall is here and you can enjoy the cooler air.
You’re a coffee lover too?! I always like mine iced. I tried the cold brew iced coffee at Starbucks and that was too strong. I make my own Peet’s coffee at home.
Thank you for your sweet comments and for nicknaming Dart, Darling Dart! He loves it.

I place two ice cubes in my morning 12 oz Folgers coffee and enjoy two on the front porch watching the birds in the oak trees and the sunrise. Starbucks breakfast blend at home is my occasional treat. 💕

I love this weather where I live. Much better than SNOW for me. I was born in Texas. Moved to Denver, CO in my 40s for 13 years. Moved back to Texas funny enough 13 years ago. I’m happy here in the “Everything is Bigger in Texas” state. Although CA would probably be my dream place to live!! Yet, at this point in my life I would not be able to afford anywhere in CA. I have visited many times in my long life.

It has been fun for me as well to read that the nickname has been adopted by readers. And I’m especially happy to know that you and Darling Dart love it too! ❤️🦎

Interesting – I don’t think I know about a shedding process, thinking it only happened to snakes.

    1. singlikewildflowers Avatar

It’s amazing to see and we check on Dart constantly to make sure we don’t miss it. We missed his 5th shed, sadly. The whole process takes about 15 minutes, while he pulls, eats, moves around, and rests. Crickets shed too… you may ask, how I know that. I saw it in the cricket feed box!! Ack.
I asked the kids and they said African dwarf frogs and bearded dragons shed too.

      1. Linda Schaub Avatar

That is amazing that he does it that often – why I wonder? Will he do that when he is full-sized too or is it because he is a juvenile? Crickets – oh wow, what you all are learning in this new pet process.

      2. singlikewildflowers Avatar

Kids tell me to stop feeding him cuteness treats, because that’s making him grow too fast! We learned that juvenile geckos shed every 2 weeks and adult shed every month. I had no idea this was the case until we saw it for ourselves and read into it. It’s probably a growth thing and when they eat their own shed, it provides a lot of nutrients. After a shed, there is no evidence it even happened except for brighter skin.
Oh my, the crickets are a whole new thing for us. An unexpected pet that comes with a pet and their dropping have a putrid smell. For the first time, a cricket escaped from its box and was hopping around in the bathroom the other night. Yikes.

      3. Linda Schaub Avatar

That is very interesting that it happens … good thing you are with him all the time to help out with the shedding. What if you are on a vacation, say a few days to visit your folks. Do you take Dart along then or you have friends/neighbors who would take him/her (I know Dart is “it” for the present time)?
