Last week, Elliot attended his first youth retreat with his church group for 4 days. Even though it was his first time away from home, he came home with lots of excitement and joy telling us about all the games and activities they did at the retreat. He seemed to have deepened his bond with the other kids and had new experiences, like helping a homesick friend feel more comfortable by talking with him at night and sleeping in a sleeping bag. I was proud to hear that he stepped out of his comfort zone to console a new friend; I had fears that he might be the homesick one. I’m so thankful to Chris for volunteering to chaperone, because I’m sure his presence helped Elliot feel safe and secure throughout the retreat. We wanted to set a positive foundation for future retreats and camps.
When Ellis and I went to pick them up on Saturday afternoon, Chris and Elliot were both exhausted. The past few days have been spent doing nothing but resting up and regaining strength. I heard some kids were coughing at the retreat, and I held out hope that maybe Elliot wouldn’t get sick. But he is usually the first one to catch something at home. When he was younger, he frequently got croup (with a barking cough, sore throat, and fever), which needed antibiotics for treatment. The crazy thing is that Elliot would catch something while Ellis, thankfully, rarely got sick from those viruses. But when she did catch something, that was a whole new drama to deal with.
When we see the pediatrician this Wednesday, he’ll probably get swabbed for COVID, RSV, and the flu. In the past two years he’s been getting parainfluenza, so maybe it’s that again. The first symptom he gets is a very sore throat that makes talking painful. There’s no antibiotics for that except for it to run its course. It’s been quiet at home yesterday. He is not feeling well right now: sore throat, low grade fever, and fatigue.
Another thing to ask our pediatrician is if we need to reschedule Ellis’ surgery this Thursday. I’m not going to overthink and fuss about it till I speak with her. But isn’t it not good to have been exposed to a cold or something similar before going into surgery? Whatever the medical decision is, I’m not going to get upset or frustrated. I’ll stay flexible and trust in God’s timing.

I hope Elliot is able to shake off this bug quickly.
He’s on the mend…quicker than usual. So thankful for this quick turnaround.
Hurray!
That’s great that Elliot was comforting a pal who was feeling homesick at the retreat. He is “big brother” to Ellis so it came quite naturally to him I suspect. I hope Elliot is feeling better as the day has worn on and it doesn’t impact Ellis (sickwise with a bug or her surgery schedule) – you are a Mama who always has her hands full.
He is doing better, thankfully! He had me worried last night and this morning. They’re not hanging out in shared spaces, and no sign of any sickness from Ellis. Whew!!
Maybe that’s true…his big brother role kicked in. When we are having a moment, he comes and gives one of us 3 soft pats on the back and a look of “I’m sorry.” lol
I remember you said he does the patting on the back and I thought at the time and mentioned to you that he is more empathetic than most kids his age. He will probably channel that empathy into his eventual livelihood. 🙂
Ahhh you take care
Best wishes to you and your family.
Seems like no rest
Tell me about it! It’s one thing after another.
Thank you…I’m taking care to take good care of my little people.
Take good care of yourself as well
Thank you for the reminder!
That’s very good you don’t going to get upset or frustrated. You will stay flexible and trust in God’s timing. You tack care! I hope Elliot is feeling better as the day has worn on and it doesn’t impact Ellis.
Thanks my dear friend, Eshter!
For sure, Raj! Me getting upset will do nothing for the situation. Trusting in God but that is not easy to do cause I want to know now. Trusting is hard business!!
Take care, Raj!
