My full and kooky life as a homeschooling mommy to 2 great kids, raising a child with HLHS (Hypolastic Left Heart Syndrome), coping with depression, following Jesus, and being much too camera happy.
Welcome to my blog! My name is Esther and I’m so happy you are here. I’m an avid nature photographer and a daydreaming thinker. My posts revolve around photos of nature’s beauty, homeschooling adventures with my 2 kids, sporadic reflections on my child’s heart condition, Bible reading reflections, gardening feats, and other mish mash things. Hopefully you’ll leave encouraged, pensive, or smiling at the simple things of life. Thank you for stopping by and hope you’ll find some interesting posts to read!
One of the first few spots before getting to The Lone Cypress tree. Saw some hermit crabs at the tidepools and found some shells on the beach. Our last time here was over 13 years ago. Nice to bring the kiddos and show them this wonderfully resilient tree. A determined tree living on the edge! I’m glad it also has a buddy nearby. The wind was fierce blowing our hair all over the place, but we still managed to take some pictures.Stairs down to the deck for a better viewSide view on the way down to the deckExtremely windy! Overlooking the deck are rough waves crashing against the rocky cliffs down below.
What a wonderful place to live!! Monterey is a small town but full of charm and beauty.
We finally made it to down there before our membership expired and this time added the 17 mile drive to our itinerary.
It was a scenic route with lots of stops to touch the water, walk on the sand, and touch some tidepool animals. That Lone Cypress is still standing strong! Its roots much run very deep and wide. But yes, I wonder how it withstands the fierce winds.

What a great outing Esther! Great education, gigantic exercise, and greater than great for everyone’s souls after such a long winter.
I loved the education myself. The view is gorgeous. I will say that this is my favorite post of yours. Thank you for sharing and writing about it.
That makes me so happy to hear!! Thank you TD for saying you liked this post the best. Inspires me to do more like this and feel the reward of blogging.
It was a wonderful outing to get outdoors and experience nature up-close. I hope that Lone Cypress continues to stay strong and thrive through the years.
Such a beautiful spot! Is it far from your home? Many years ago we visited a small section of the California coast at La Jolla. I would have liked to spend more time in the area but our main objective was Disneyworld with our 9 year old.
Monterey is over an hour’s drive from where I live. It’s not that far, but getting out there is not as much as we’d like. La Jolla is in San Diego in Southern California, which is about 6 hours away from Monterey. La Jolla’s beaches are serene and lots of seals and beautiful views.
Yes, for a 9 year old…Disneyland sounds way more exciting and fun than La Jolla.
That’s convenient to have shorter distance travels!
To go from where we live in northern California is wearisome on the body when driving and as a passenger. The E trio suffers from motion sickness, so we take Benadryl before these drives.
I was “introduced” to this tree by another friend who lived in California for some time. He was quite a hiker, etc., and loved all the great natural attractions of the state. It was fun to see it again!
Yes, this tree is quite famous! It’s got a rebel and rebellious spirit. How it withstands the strong weather and winds is a mystery.
I’m glad you were able to see it again through my picture!! Thank you.
Very picturesque Esther! I saw this tree back in 1980 when I was on a tour of the 17-mile drive. Pretty amazing to think what it has withstood. Like the TV commercial “takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’.”
This tree has been around decades…hard to believe how it’s withstood so much over the years. It’s a beautiful backdrop for that Lone Cypress and the other trees growing on the side of the cliffs were amazing too.
Tenacity keeps it there thru all your bad weather.

Beautiful walk at the beach! and such a lovely tree. It’s amazing how it has withstood the strong sea breezes.

I forget about distances in the US. Nothing is far from anything here in the Algarve. End to end in under a couple of hours.
