Today is our day to refill the water troughs, and we attempted again to get closer to the lambs. But they’re highly sensitive to humans and sounds, made by the crunching sounds of our shoes on the dry grass. It’s a patience game and we stood there slowly waving at the lambs to let them know we come in peace and love. lol.
On our walk to the lamb’s area:
Gingerly walking towards the lambs, which are happily eating and resting under the shaded tent. That was as close as the kids got to the lambs until the flock leader stood up and everyone else followed his lead to leave the humans behind.
No luck petting the lambs, and now it’s time to refill the water troughs. Lambs enjoy their cool drink and off they go!
Another attempt to get close, but those crunchy steps don’t help at all.

I didn’t realize that Elliot was doing that to his arms until I looked at the pictures again. They love the farm and the fresh air outdoors. They were pumped that maybe that day they could pet a lamb! Of course, it didn’t happen. If we have the assignment of weighing the lambs with the other youth and project leader, then maybe that’s the only physical contact we’ll have with them. lol
It is good for them to get out and enjoy the farm – fun times and I had no idea that lambs were so skittish. But at least they don’t scream like goats do. Have you every seen the videos of goats screaming? They are very funny!
I had no idea either! You can imagine the daydreams we had about petting the lambs and hanging out with them. That dream has dashed. I think they need to get really comfortable with you…maybe tend to them everyday for many days.
Yes, goats are loud! I haven’t seen any videos, but they seem to be the most vocal at the farm.
I think we were both thinking of the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and had a different idea of lambs. Goats jump up on things, or each other and yes, they are vocal!
What an education about basic care of livestock your family is experiencing! It’s definitely not a petting zoo.
How long will your family be doing this 4H project?
Thank you! This project will last till mid June. It’s a great experience for us to have this hands-on experience with the lambs. So thankful that we got to participate in this project.
Not a petting zoo at all…you can’t even get that close to the lambs. This 4-H farm has goats and chickens for other youth to take care of also.
That sounds fantastic and just the right number of weeks for everyone to get the experience of it. The photos appear like Ellis is getting a lot of physical activity for her heart health. I’m glad that your family got to be in the spring time. Does Elliot take any interest in raising farm animals as a career?
It is just the right amount of time for everyone. Yes, Ellis had been getting a lot of physical exercise, which is great for her heart. But at the end of the week, she’s exhausted and get nose bleeds. We still have Diamond too and she’s a lot of fun. She goes home tomorrow.
Not sure what Elliot wants to do in the future. But he loves animals and is very interested in them. If he didn’t have allergies and we lived in a house with a big backyard, we’d have all kinds of animals.
