I read about November’s supermoon on msn earlier this week, and assumed that I missed seeing it. The dates get all mixed up in my head and I didn’t even check when it was supposed to happen. However, on Friday night we were getting into the car, when all of us noticed the moon extraordinarily illuminating the sky. Yes, we see bright and big full moons, but this one was far superior to those. And that’s when I realized that this was the “supermoon.”
On the NASA website, it says that the supermoon ” was coined in 1979 and occurs when a full Moon coincides with its closes approach to Earth.” And I wondered how it got its quirky name as the Beaver Moon. It can’t be someone just picking a random animal and arbitrarily sticking it onto the November full moon.

Beaver Moon is one of the nicknames for the November full Moon. The term has origins from a variety of traditions and folklore in Native American and European culture. One explanation ā November is when beavers prepare for the winter by fortifying dams and stocking their food supply. November was also the season to trap beavers for their thick, winter-readyĀ pelts to use for warmer clothing.

I grew up hearing the phrase “busy as a beaver” from time to time. It probably arose from the same source: animals getting ready for the winter. Our squirrels certainly have been that busy!
I’ve definitely been noticing the squirrels working overtime these days! When I hear them on the trees, I hope they don’t fall on my head. I’d be in for a surprise.
I’ve heard “busy as a bee”…but now I’m going to use “busy as a beaver” too.

It’s amazing and I’ve seen people take pictures of the Supermoon with a telephone lens and you can see the craters – spooky!
I have never heard of the Beaver Moon. Your beautiful pictures look like it is daytime with the moon so bright.
I didn’t know until the news mentioned it and it kept showing up on my feed. But the Beaver Moon is extremely bright and noticeable.
