Learning a new skill related to technology is giving me heart palpitations! The tech savvy person in our house is Chris and I’ve always been the slow adopter. So, I’ve been pushing myself to learn a computer-related skill like Photoshop. It’s like confronting my daunting fears of pressing a button and getting frustrated with an error message or getting stuck in a process of not knowing the next steps.
But I’m changing my mindset. It’s taken me all these years to undertake Photoshop, so obviously, the learning process will take time and lots of patience to build new skills and get familiar with its many tools and uses.
It’s only been a week, and when I try new tricks (that the tutorials show as simple and straightforward but it does nothing for me), I want to give up and just call it quits. That’s a terrible and hurried mindset to have when learning something new. So I’ve been giving myself pep talks and extending the timetable in my mind that this will take a long time to learn.
I want to show my kids that learning is not a linear process but an iterative process of going back and forth and making progress while learning from mistakes! I have more empathy for them as learners.

Photoshop is a huge program to learn and there is a massive amount to learn. A few classes needed to understand the main tools and lots of practice needed to remember it all… not for the faint hearted! Well done on daring. There are simpler programs you can use for the basic functions you will use most.
Photoshop is overwhelming with all its features and tools!! I looked at the interface and how to do the layers, and yep, I felt like turning off the computer. You’re right…it’s not for the fainthearted although I feel like it.
Thank you for the encouragement! What are the simpler programs? I’m not trying to be a professional here but just want to mess around with photos.
If you take photos with your phone mainly, use Snapseed. Free and straightforward to use.

I take my hat off to you for trying. I’m a very slow and impatient learner when it comes to technology (and most other things too!) Photoshop is quite expensive so I’ve never tried. That’s one frustration spared.
Thank you, Jo! I know what you mean. I too am a slow and impatient learner with technology. I’m finally going to wrestle the beast and see if I make headway. lol. I suspect I’ll be frustrated lots this year. Ellis was going to join me in the Photoshop journey but once she saw the interface, she politely declined and said she’ll do something else.
Yes, it’s an investment for the program and there are online classes you can take too for a fee. I’ll wait on that and take it if I really don’t make any progress.

Oh yeah it’s difficult the first time and you need some guidance but still fun!
The most important thing is to have fun while you’re learning!
I’m getting there! I started it out as a fun project but there’s so much to learn and all these hiccups along the way. I need to recheck my learning stance every now and then to re-center myself and not get too overwhelmed by it.

Thank you! I hope to keep it up this year and become more fluent with the program. It’s overwhelming to learn all the tools it offers. Ack! But I will persist. One tool and one mistake at a time.
