sing like wildflowers

My full and kooky life as a homeschooling mommy to 2 great kids, raising a child with HLHS (Hypolastic Left Heart Syndrome), coping with depression, following Jesus, and being much too camera happy.

What is this cute plant growing in the crack of the sidewalk?! It’s the first time I’ve seen a plant grow this tall in this rough environment.

I like to call these ‘accidental gardens.’ I can’t tell for sure, but I think this might be a spurge. It makes sense, since they’re tough little plants and will pop up almost anywhere; some of our spurges seem to prefer poor soil. They’re often seen alongside roads and such.

You articulated it so well; it is an “accidental garden.” I didn’t know about a spurge until now. Thank you for letting me know about it. It’s good information to have to share with the kids.

‘Spurge’ is another name for the Euphorbia genus; the family name is Euphorbiaceae. There are lots of familiar plants in the genus, like the poinsettia. Here’s a link that shows pictures of some common ones.

My plant ID app says this one is Euphorbia peplus. It can be hard to tell when photographing off a computer, but that might give you a hint about its identity.

I just printed out the first page, so we remember it! Thank you for this information. This pretty thing is a weed!
By the way, my mom got an instant Dandelion beverage from her friend and she loves it. She bought some dandelion roots from the supermarket and is going to eat it in her salads. It made me think of you because you posted about dandelions last month or so.
Now my parents are on a dandelion kick and they planted some dandelion seeds in their garden. We’ll see how much grows! I’m kind of nervous they’ll be overtaken my them since my dad decided to plant the whole bag of seeds…shaking my head. It was a LOT of seeds.

Nice blooming in the crack of sidewalk. Sometime blooming anywhere. It’s accidentally blooming garden. Beautiful you found the tree. But you are perfect the tree shot. I like.

A blogger friend identified it as Euphorbia peplus. It’s supposed to be a weed ,but it’s so pretty!

Thank you! It was my daughter who took this picture. She is very observant and she find things that we overlook. I will let her know!
You’re right…it’s like nature’s little bonsai that decided to pop up in the crack on the sidewalk. Such a resilient little thing.

This little plant reminds me of that fun fact of the tiny tree. 🙂

It’s cute. Don’t send Teddy out to chomp on it. I put it in the same category as dandelions – they grow anywhere and everywhere!
