My full and kooky life as a homeschooling mommy to 2 great kids, raising a child with HLHS (Hypolastic Left Heart Syndrome), coping with depression, following Jesus, and being much too camera happy.

Temperature is starting to soar in California. This summer, the temperature has been unusually mild, but the past couple of days have been warmer, like too hot. One of my succulents has burnt leaves from the scorching sun!

Ellis does NOT do well with heat, and it triggers her migraine. She’s had 2 in the past 3 days, and I’ve been on high alert! She did have a busy active week with a 4-H outreach events, market rabbit meeting, and living life. My little lady is so sensitive that doing something out of the ordinary has these repercussions. This is something I struggle to balance with 2 kids, who have different energy levels. Thankfully, Elliot is understanding and will deal with schedule disruptions without complaint, which makes me sad because he’s learned through the years that this is the only way it works for the family.

Teddy is sensitive to heat, too, so we have a fan running for him. Ellis has air conditioning and is lounging on the couch. Evenings are much better for her. So we stay still and keep watching that her migraine mellows out throughout the day. By the times she’s back to normal and talkative again, I’m ready to lay down and nurse my stress and trauma.

You have such a difficult and narrow road to travel as a family. Feeling for you, Esther.

Thank you. It is a difficult road and there’s a lot of worries. On good days. I tend to forget how bad it can get, but when there’s a little blip in her condition, I tense up in fear that we’ll go through another hospital journey. On iffy days, she’s good one hour and then the next she’s not. All that vigilance drains me and I don’t want her to know that it does, which double drains me. Ack!
Thankfully, she improved in the afternoon and she started to eat and went back to her normal self.

Oh Esther, I get the exhaustion from dealing with the condition while not showing your distress.

Thank you for the affirmation. It does wonders for my soul.

I’m glad Ellis is managing to cope with her heat-related migraines. I used to get them, too. The pits.

    1. singlikewildflowers Avatar

Oh no, you used to get them too? Now I’m more aware of how temperature affects her, so that’s something I have to watch out for. She’s a strong kid but so fragile too.

Yes, although not recently. It helps to move out of the South!

We had the air conditioning on all yesterday and it gave me a sore throat! I will miss the longer summer days but cooler weather sounds good too.

That’s too bad the sudden horribly hot weather is wreaking havoc on Ellis since she’s been so free of migraines of late. Teddy with all that fur must be feeling hot as well. Well, look at it this way, school will be starting soon and then you all will be hunkered down inside in the cool A/C … Teddy as well.

You’re right…we will be back to school soon. It starts on the 18th. It’ll be a full schedule with Elliot taking online classes, have in person-tutoring, music lessons, 4-H, etc. Ellis’ schedule is slower but she does all the other extra curricular stuff with Elliot. We gotta take it slow and easy and flexible to change schedule if she doesn’t feel well. It’s a juggling act!
This week was the first time that Ellis took her new medicine prescribed by a psychiatrist. Her previous medicine wasn’t working and it made her very teary. So 2 meetings with the psychiatrist and her getting the medication approved by the cardiologist got Ellis a new medicine. This is the pre medicine before she takes the rescue medicine. If the pre medicine doesn’t work, then we bring out the rescue med. It’s been a busy summer with doctors!

Thank you! This means we stay indoors and stay cool; if we go out, minimize the time outside without a/c.

Thank you, Raj! Her condition improved in the afternoon and you couldn’t even tell that she wasn’t well in the morning. I’ve noticed that heat does this to her, so I’m staying mindful of it now.

Esther, so sorry you are stretched in so many directions. Praying for strength and peace for you. God has blessed you with two incredible kids and you are a fantastic mom.

Thank you so much for your kind words!! God has blessed me immensely and I try to take it in stride. My heart skips a beat when she doesn’t eat as normal or yawns midday. A continuous yawn is a sign that she is not feeling well and she will not admit it to me right away, because I tend to panic.

Sounds like you both know each other very well and also protect each other. ❤️

Too hot is no good. We were in Arizona this weekend and it was 115° outside. It cooled off to 98° at 6 AM. It was ridiculous. One afternoon I got so overly heated. I had to lie down. I was extremely cranky and could not control my emotional state in an adult-like fashion. After about 20 minutes of line perfectly still my mood completely shifted back to normal. Ridiculous.

You’re doing a great job. Raising kids is hard. You have extra things to navigate than a lot of other people do. God knows what He’s doing, He knows what’s best for Elliot (your family) and He will continue to bless him throughout his life.

    1. singlikewildflowers Avatar

Oh my gosh, 115 is extremely hot and uncomfortable. I can understand why you got so cranky! Heat will do that to you. I’m so happy that you got your alone time and was able to reset. It’s difficult to reset when you’re in a bad mood and the mind goes haywire thinking that the day is already shot. I’m proud of you! Hey, you gotta give yourself a break for feeling out of control.
Thank you for your thoughtful words! You’re right that God will bless Elliot and fill in the gaps that I think he’s missing in his life. We all have our stories and this is part of his story. I feel blessed to have this community and you to journey through this season of life together.
