sing like wildflowers

My full and kooky life as a homeschooling mommy to 2 great kids, raising a child with HLHS (Hypolastic Left Heart Syndrome), coping with depression, following Jesus, and being much too camera happy.

We got a late start and missed the first class, but in the second class Teddy got mid place. The competition is fierce with the other holland Lop bucks looking handsome and very stocky. He needs more time to grow! The judge said that he needs more mass.

There’s one more class left to see how Teddy places.

In the meantime, we’re waiting for the costume contest.

Sibling portrait with Teddy: we take it at every show

The portrait of the kids with Teddy is very nice Esther – you should have it framed. I’m sorry Teddy didn’t get higher marks, but we all think he is cute and handsome too. So, how do you bulk him up then without him getting too pudgy?

Thank you, Linda! At the local shows, there is a lady who always comes to do portraits for the rabbits and she sets up a new background according to the season. We started the tradition of getting both kids in the picture since the first one we didn’t have a rabbit and we only got them in the picture. It’s fun to see how they are growing. She had to retake the kid’s photos this time because the first one had a big glare on Ellis’ glasses and it looked silly with the round green halo in her glasses.
Teddy has some bulking up to do, but we have to take it slowly. If he eats too much bananas, it could rot his teeth. He also eats dried papayas and pineapples, but that’s for his digestive health. Hay – that’s fiber and that just helps him stay healthy. Wheaties will bulk him up but we’re told not to go crazy on them. He also eats a teaspoon of special vitamins for his coat. I think he needs time to grow. But maybe he’s just a petite rabbit. Oh well, in that case, his show rabbit days may be numbered.
Thank you for saying that about Teddy! He appreciate the shot out.

That’s nice what they do at the shows – that’s thoughtful to have the photographer handy to do the photos. I was thinking Teddy qualifying was more about how you are able to handle him – I remember you had to learn how to do that to show him … I wasn’t thinking about his size and how that would impact participating in the events going forward. Teddy is still young so I hope he will have a chance to take part in the shows as you all enjoy the experience.

I don’t know anything about showing rabbits. What criteria are they judged on besides mass? Is there a target weight range he’s supposed to be fitting into? Teddy looks like the best rabbit there in my opinion!

I didn’t know about rabbit showing until we got into this world. We’re still learning and wondering why we are doing this. lol
Show rabbits, which you get from specific breeders, are judged according to their breed, age, sex, and color. A rabbit that is younger than six months old is judged in the junior section, and rabbits over 6 months is considered a senior. Bucks and does get judged separately. Teddy is judged in the senior buck category with a solid color for the breed Holland Lops. There are three classes, which means, the registered rabbits in that class are judged by a judge, with each class having a different judge. They are evaluated on their bone structure, mass, color, and pose. For example, if a Holland Lop rabbit has longer ears than what is specified in the Standard of Perfection book, than the rabbit gets points docked or is disqualified. If there is a missing toe nail or a dead tail, they are disqualified. It’s an interesting world! I hope this helps with understanding! Please let me know if you have more questions.
Teddy, as a senior buck, is still too small and needs to grow. The judge said that he has a small crown, but I don’t know what to do about that. Oh well! But when Teddy is with the other rabbits, it’s easy to tell that he is a skinny one. Thank you for saying that!! I will surely tell Teddy. He was a bit disappointed on Saturday for making 7th and then 9th place out of 12. We missed the first class, so he wasn’t placed. Maybe the next show he will do better! It’s a fun thing to do…kind of a pageant for rabbits.
Our 4-H friend just got a new Holland Lop doe and she won first place in all 3 classes and even got ribbons for best of breed and best of opposite sex. Geesh!
