sing like wildflowers

My full and kooky life as a homeschooling mommy to 2 great kids, raising a child with HLHS (Hypolastic Left Heart Syndrome), coping with depression, following Jesus, and being much too camera happy.

When we go on nature walks or visit an arboretum, like we did last week in Santa Cruz, kids love to be the first one to spot an interesting phenomena and to take pictures of it. It’s sibling rivalry at play; I constantly tell them that it’s not a race, but they ignore my words. Through these interactions, however, they learn to share, give credit to the other person, and affirm the other’s efforts. In between all the positives, we have some moments too!

In one part of the arboretum (I wish I had noted it for recall), a sign informed visitors that the plants and trees in this trail will have an abundance of hummingbirds. They were not exaggerating. As you approached the trees and plants, you could hear a loud chorus of chirping and trill-like sounds, and if you got closer to one of them, you could hear the buzz and vibration from their flapping wings. But if you stood there longer for a few seconds, they would fly away and the chirps inside the trees would become faint. Walk away, and you begin to hear the chirps again.

Elliot took great photos, really up close. I have never taken such up-close shots. I am never lucky enough to find hummingbirds, except at the one park with a nature center and they are far away. Hummingbirds are amazing little creatures. Good work Elliot!

Thank you, I’ll let Elliot know! He was proud of taking close ups of those tiny birds. Hummingbirds are notoriously difficult to get a picture up close, but it was only possible at the arboretum because of the many trees that attract hummingbirds. We want to go again, but the traffic and winding road stop me from doing it any time soon.

Yes, very good shots as they move so quickly. I only got the one shot of Hope the Hummingbird and it wasn’t great. They had a butterfly exhibit at the Botanical Gardens recently – you go into an area that is mesh enclosed and they allow butterflies to foam free and they sit on your shoulder. I did not go as I don’t go to crowded events since COVID, but I saw the photos afterward – it did look fun.

Thank you for saving the pic! I will let Elliot know.
Hummingbirds are tiny birds but they have loud chirps. One of our favorite things to do is go on nature walks and make new discoveries, which it seems there’s always something new to learn.
God bless you too and have a great start to a new week. 🙂
