My full and kooky life as a homeschooling mommy to 2 great kids, raising a child with HLHS (Hypolastic Left Heart Syndrome), coping with depression, following Jesus, and being much too camera happy.

Catching up on homework requires roars
And a prize afterwards

After my chores this afternoon, I felt like roaring too! I’m looking for my prize…

I hear you…chores can be tiresome and requires some roaring to blow off steam!! What should you get for your prize, maybe some refreshing iced coffee?
      Have a great weekend 🙂

Did Elliot get his braces yet?

    1. singlikewildflowers Avatar

Yes, he got his braces in July! It seems most pics are of him wearing a mask. He just got them tightened the other day. And after our vacation, he got sick with something. Usually, it’s throat related and he gave it to us. lol. So we are all fatigued and getting over something he caught.

Well at least you didn’t get sick while on vacation thankfully. I had my tonsils out at age 16 – was the oldest kid in the pediatric wing. But then in my 20s and early 30s I was getting colds and sore throats, so went to an ear, nose & throat doc and he said the original ENT did not take out all of the tonsil’s “root” and I had to go in and have it removed (outpatient surgery three days before Christmas). Maybe Elliot has to have his tonsils out. I couldn’t tell as you are right, you all have masks on in public. Braces are not fun, but the ones today are easier than the old-fashioned kind I had that wrapped around each tooth, not just sat on top of it.

      2. singlikewildflowers Avatar

Yep, the doctor did mention the tonsils, but it wasn’t brought up again this year. We’ll have to see.
EEEEk, what an experience for you to get your tonsils’ procedure 2 times. Is it a painful process? I remember when I was in grade school, I wish I needed to have my tonsils removed. One of my classmates missed school for days from that, and I wanted to have a valid reason for staying home. Silly?!
Braces are working out well for Elliot. There was discomfort and pain the first week, but he got used to it quickly. Invisalign was a choice, but that’s similar to retainers where it’s more cumbersome, Might forget. Braces seem much easier to have on and forget about it.
I got braces two times…7 years total. Geessh, you had it pretty rough with the braces and head brace too. How things have changed!

Esther, I heard an interview on my all-news station today and thought of you. The doc was a pediatrician and said strep throat is going around in Michigan right now. He said sometimes getting the tonsils out helps – other times it doesn’t help. But fir me, after the second tonsillectomy, this time done properly, no more getting sick. I swear I’d ride up in the elevator with someone who was coughing and end up sick the next day. I was glad the ENT figured it out. But I had that tonsillectomy in 1987 and 31, so recovery is longer for adults. I had the procedure done 12/22 and figured I’d be able to return after Christmas but I got an ear infection, so was off until the beginning of the year.
That’s good there are no issues with the braces. My mom would make casseroles or what she called “mush” for a few days after I got them tightened once a month. I remember trying to eat a banana the first day I got my braces and it hurt. Once over 4th of July, my braces locked, top to bottom on one side and my father took the tin snips so I could open my mouth but had a huge piece of wax where the wire was sticking out.
Twice for braces – as bad as twice for a tonsillectomy! Braces are so much easier now that they don’t wrap around each tooth.

So many stories about our youth!! Biting down on anything hurts when you first get braces or get them tightened.
Thank goodness, Elliot didn’t need to take any teeth out. Ellis needs to get them removed once her baby teeth falls out. Oral surgeon told us to come back in 6 months to see if they need to intervene to remove baby teeth.

Oh yes, even having a milkshake hurt the first evening/next day. I had to have my top rear molars removed, but I was an adult when I got braces. So when my wisdom teeth grew in on top, they were used as top rear molars Then I got my braces off in Spring of 1979 and soon my bottom wisdom teeth grew in and were impacted and had to be removed ASAP.

Getting teeth removed for braces is a painful procedure, and to have your bottom wisdom teeth grow in after your braces!! Glad you got them out right away. All that trouble and pain!!

Did you take schoolwork on vacation? To Hawaii?

    1. singlikewildflowers Avatar

Teaching Textbooks on my computer and their reading books. I was ambitious… but we ended up doing no homework.
We missed 1 week of writing and catching up on that homework made up for the lag. It was back to the grind right away.
Our ES recommended IEW writing and Elliot’s class is going super fast.

      1. heavenstobetty Avatar

        You were very ambitious!!
We are traveling home from Portland and we didn’t do any schoolwork last week either. 😁

      2. singlikewildflowers Avatar

Don’t worry about it!! There’s too much to do and see when you’re on a trip and time is so limited. Seriously, we didn’t crack open a page while we were there. Different kinds of learning while you play.
        Safe travels back home!!

      3. heavenstobetty Avatar

Seriously way too much to do! Lots of learning just no workbooks 😂

      4. singlikewildflowers Avatar

I’m glad you were wise and decided to just enjoy immersion and lived experiences learning. Not to mention, family memories. The blackberry jam making is something not too many will have the experience doing after picking them.

      5. singlikewildflowers Avatar

Yes, how exciting that you’re traveling too! It’s hard to sit down and do schoolwork when time is limited and you want to sightsee.

  7. singlikewildflowers Avatar

Have you heard of IEW? The jump from level a to level b is big. Had i known, I would’ve had Elliot take level a again. But then again, I had to let Ellis take it and the sibling rivalry would too bad. But the speed of the class is fast and we are bobbing our heads in class.

  8. heavenstobetty Avatar

I haven’t looked into IEW. I’ll have to google it.
    Do you recommend it?

    1. singlikewildflowers Avatar

I was hesitant at first because I didn’t want a structured writing course. So I tried Brave Writer for a year, which is more open ended with some structured work. But I was the problem…hard to teach consistently!! IEW is pretty good with weekly meetings with the teacher and turning in homework for grades. Gave us some structure to a difficult subject. Our ES mentioned that most students take each level 2 years, which i didn’t know about and couldn’t do because Ellis needed to take it. It requires a lot of parent participation, but yes, I do recommend it! Elliot didn’t want to admit but he said the class is helping him…that coming from a reluctant reader and writer.

      1. heavenstobetty Avatar

I will look it up! Thank you for the info! 🥰

      2. singlikewildflowers Avatar

Sure! It helps with structure and consistency and building up on writing skills. Accountability too.
