My full and kooky life as a homeschooling mommy to 2 great kids, raising a child with HLHS (Hypolastic Left Heart Syndrome), coping with depression, following Jesus, and being much too camera happy.

The weekend was harsh with our family. Ellis had ups and downs with nausea that happened abruptly throughout the days. The nagging fear that we might end up going to the hospital took a chokehold on all of us. We’ve been through this many times, but it’s never easy to make the decision to go.

It started Thursday with the throwing up and I was quietly getting my heart ready again for another hospital visit. Even though she didn’t vomit after Thursday, nausea plagued her, as well as her fear that cyclic vomiting may start up again for her. Thankfully, she made headway on Sunday night as her steps got a little pep in them and she started talking more than just nodding.

It’s hard to explain what happens to our psyche, but when she gets quiet and has an uncomfortable look on her face, that she tries to conceal to us with a fake smile, all of us get extremely quiet and tension of the unknown permeates the house. Many times she puts up a facade of being okay so that we don’t worry, but it’s obvious by her facial expression and demeanor.

When she takes a nap, we communicate with our eyes and facial expression of how we think she’s faring. It’s been years of us doing this vigilant watch and each time my heart takes a bashing. Chris doesn’t show it but you can see the concerned look and moments of hopeful happiness when she eats more than a few bites.

One of my coping mechanism is cleaning and I’ll work myself up to clean the kitchen, the patio, the floors, and even some decluttering. Ha! I should rest while she’s resting in case we need to go to the hospital but keeping my hands busy calms my mind. This time I felt like the pressure was causing cracks in my mind.

Our house is now again in its normal state and we are now watching a movie together in the living room. Ellis has a comfortable smile and has been eating snacks. Whew. Thank the Lord for this regular Monday night that we can enjoy as a family. Little moments like these confirm my belief that simple joys together are priceless.

I hope you are all enjoying a good start to this new week! Thank you everyone for supporting us with your encouragement, support, and prayers. We are beyond blessed with people who care about us.

First Saturday of August at a county fair to help fundraise money for 4-H by selling nuts. This was a happy weekend before the dreadful bouts of sickness and nausea episodes. Looking forward to a healthier and relaxes autumn season.

Each member of the family suffers so much, often individually. I am so sorry. I worry about her brother. If I can help, please email me, but tell me in the subject line it is you.

So true, Cindy! We each have our own internal struggles when Ellis gets sick. I worry about Elliot through these episodes but he’s been showing so much maturity this year. He used to have jealousy issues coupled with worry when we used to go to the hospital. He told me this summer when he was hospitalized for pneumonia that he kind of understands how uncomfortable it is for Ellis to be in the hospital too. We’re learning and growing!
Thank you for your comment and offer to help! I will definitely reach out if I need help. I appreciate your thoughtfulness.

This must be so hard to live with, Esther! I can feel the tension, just from your descriptions. Will the cooler weather help? I do hope so.

Cooler weather does help as sitting outside eases the nausea. We sit outside a lot when she feels this way and life comes to an abrupt stop as we wrangle with the pestering nausea.
Thank you for your comment! It does a soul good to feel heard and seen.

“Normal” is underrated … rejoice for normal is what I say because your family deserves it. The kids are growing up quickly when I see this photo.

It feels glorious to not have to worry ceaselessly and to be so vigilant. We’re back to their writing lessons and math tutoring. Elliot has been video gaming too…he’s part of an esports team with his charter school, so he has his first tournament in 2 weeks. In the meantime, he takes online lessons about gaming and tech stuff. lol. Might as well get some learning out of all that video gaming.

That’s great – schoolwork is often mundane, but you make is interesting, plus their outside interests help to balance out the kids’ school year. Is 4-H Club still active in the school year? I know you probably had to miss some of the get-togethers after the nut-selling event.
