We’re happy to be home from the hospital! Ellis was discharged late last night, which is surprising since her episodes and recovery can go for days.
Doctors didn’t say anything about discharge all day, so we assumed we were going to leave Friday. But her condition was stable all day since morning, meaning she didn’t have nausea, throwing up, or retching.
Even though it was 7:45 p.m., Chris and I decided to ask the nurse if discharge was possible. She told us that Ellis didn’t meet her goal of drinking 1 liter of water until 6 p.m., so once she drinks a few more ounces in the morning, she could go home.
We had no idea about this goal until that time, so we politely asked to talk to the doctor. In the meantime, Ellis heard this discussion, and we see her busily taking more sips of water and her eyes getting red with tears ready to burst.
Conclusion: her cyclic vomiting symptoms subsided; she can eat and drink on her own without an iv; and if Chris and I feel confident that Ellis is doing better, she can get discharged.
All this back and forth conversation alarmed Ellis, and she assumed we were staying another night. The tears wouldn’t stop until we got in the car.
I think she was super tired and couldn’t follow the discussion because so much was on the line for her. She came home and took a shower, and then once she was ready for bed, she asked me if she should take a shower. What?? Her legs are weak and she is a slow walker for now. Hope she perks up today and gets back to her silly, spunky self!!
We are so happy to have a new precedence of cyclic vomiting lasting only a day. Thankful to God for giving me strength and stamina to keep up!! He is always everywhere in our midst, but it’s more obvious when times get tough. Love that guy upstairs š!

Amen to that!! I had no idea why we landed in the hospital again, but in hindsight I have gained hope from it. I will carry her medications with me, even for trips that are just one hour away. And it doesn’t always have to be doomsday when the cyclic vomiting occurs. I say this now, but when a recurrence of it happens, I might be saying otherwise.
Yes, do that so you have it at the ready. But that’s tough in your extreme heat – is that a problem carrying the medicine around with you? I hope this is the start of less violent attacks of cyclic vomiting.
I don’t think so. I’ll carry it around in my backpack or my purse. The patch behind the ear seemed to have helped a lot, since that was something new we tried this time before going to the hospital.
Okay – well that is a good idea with anti-motion sickness patches. I have known people in the past who have worn them. I was with a tour group years ago and there was a person in the group who had issues on trains and buses and had to sit a certain way and away from the windows to avoid getting sick from seeing moving images outside and had to sit backward, so not see those moving images.
I understand that person who had to sit a certain way or face a certain way to avoid motion sickness. It makes a big difference in making those adjustments.
This patch medication lasts 3 days, but if you need to wash your hands if you touch it by accident. If you accidentally touch your eyes after touching the patch, your vision gets blurry temporarily. Ellis was very wary of touching it and prompt to wash her hands afterwards.
I’m amazed at the kinds of medicine out there. If you get nausea, another way to quell it is to snack on some sour candy. Not a medically proven method, but it’s supposed to work!
I never knew anyone who suffered from motion sickness before, so I found that interesting. I used to see the ads on TV or magazines for a product called “Dramamine” for motion sickness. That’s interesting about the patch and what it in it. I’d be tempted to put a bandage or wear clothing over top to avoid accidentally handling it. I wonder why sour candy works to quell nausea. My mom told me her first trimester of pregnancy she was very nauseous and the only food she could keep down was Arrowroot teething cookies for babies.
I could see how Arrowroot teething cookies would help with your mom’s nausea…nice texture, slightly sweet but bland taste. Great for nausea! I ate bread and fruits and juices…perfect for gaining so much weight!
Dramamine is still very popular and they sell it at stores. I used to take them when I was in my 20s, but the dosage must’ve been strong. I couldn’t open my eyes and I’d get overly drowsy and nod until my head would swing to my chest. Ack…embarrassing on the plane. lol
She said she would never eat another Arrowroot cookie after months of living on just them. We bought them in later years – they are nice if you feel like something with some crunch
I only take an OTC pill (Alavert) for my allergies from April through June, despite getting shots, but once, years ago, I had a big project at work, a Brief I think, and my allergies were bothersome to a point of non-stop sneezing. One of the attorneys gave me an OTC allergy pill that he took. He got it out of his desk drawer and I trusted him – sat outside his door, he wasn’t trying to poison me, right? And I was just miserable sneezing, etc. Within five minutes, I felt like my head was in the other room like an out-of-body experience. I had to hand off the project as I was useless for hours after that.
