Our family made a trip down to L.A. last week to throw my parent’s their golden wedding anniversary. I felt frazzled on our drive down when the heavy rains and fog limited visibility, and some clever drivers turned on their emergency blinkers. Usually, it’s a 6 hour drive, but it took us 8 hours; we only took a ten-minute rest at Starbucks for coffee and bathroom break. The next day, my right knee felt achy with sudden pain spurts from sitting in one position for so many hours.
Overall, we were proud of how the decorations, set-up, and flower arrangements turned out! Since we were there the day before the party, it was mad dashing trying to get everything together. I opened up the Amazon box that had been delivered to their house with the decorations. You never know how they would look in reality when you order only from pictures, but I was pleasantly surprised with the simplicity of putting together the banner and hanging decorations.
We bought several bouquets of flowers from Costco and Ellis arranged them in vases. I copied 2 pictures of them when they were younger, laminated them, and cut them into round shapes and glued them onto large popsicle sticks to put as decorations in the flower vases. Chris picked up the cake on the morning of and a family member who has a catering prepared a variety of Korean foods and traditional rice cake dessert. Extended family and guests were pleased, and Chris also performed some magic tricks for added fun.
Whew, we came back home on Sunday night exhausted but happy. It was amazing to see all our loved ones and catch up on life together. It was a short visit, but we managed to spend time with Chris’s mom, his brother’s families, my uncles and aunts, and parents. It was uneventful in that way, but Ellis got sick one night with her feeling the vomiting urges starting up again. When she gave me the look, my adrenaline and paranoia kicked in. The sickness wasn’t so bad that it required her rescue med, but she used another medication to nip the sickness in the bud.
Relieved to be home and to return to our normal routines!

What a wonderful celebration you gave them! Love the cake and balloons. Your two look quite grown up in that photo- the passage of time!
Thank you, Jo!! It was a great time, but I am so glad that it’s behind us. The pre-anxiety of it all kept me preoccupied.
I wish my parents had been able to celebrate such an anniversary — they were together only 38 years before Dad died. It’s not only wonderful that yours reached that special day, it’s even greater that so many family members were able to join in the celebration. It looks like wonderful fun — and I would have loved to try some of those dishes arrayed on the table!
Thank you, Linda! It was a great day and we were so happy that family was able to join us. We lost one of my uncles last year though.
It was a milestone and I’m so glad that we were able to celebrate with them. My mom was sickly while I was growing up and I always feared that she’d pass while I was younger. When I was in my mid twenties, my mom was very ill and came out to visit me with my dad in new york city. It was bittersweet, because we tried to make it the best times together even though we were afraid.
Oh, I wish your parent had celebrated more years together too!
How fun 🤩 the decorations look great!
Thank you!! When I opened the package, I didn’t think it was going to look great. But it came out much nicer than I expected. It was actually a birthday decoration set. If you want the link, let me know.
I’ll bet your parents with thrilled with their party! Ellis and Elliot look so grown-up in their picture!!
Thank you! Yes, they were very happy and it was a good time to bond. We don’t get to visit my parents and mil too often, so this times was really special.
They are growing up fast; hard to believe!!
You’re welcome!
I’m glad Ellis’s Rx worked to curb the nausea. Whew 😅
Thank goodness! We feel less dread with the medicine on hand. It save us a trip to the ER.
This is lovely writing Esther. I enjoy reading about your trip. The good and the not so good is all part of the package of life. Home sweet home. 🏠
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed reading it. I appreciate you saying that.
I agree with you that “the good and the not so good is all part of the package of life.” Very well articulated.
It sounds like a memorable time was had by all. I can see a lot of planning went into making this event happen, as it looks beautifully laid out. I want to sample some of those luscious-looking strawberries on the cake. Look at the kids, posing so nicely here in this chair – another keeper photo for you Esther. I’m glad you avoided any anxious moments when Ellis’ rescue meds helped tame the nausea. Kudos to the doctor who suggested these meds as that doc has saved the day several times already!
Thank you, Linda! It was a lot of planning from afar, but thankfully, everything went well and everyone had a good time. The catering went beyond our expectations and I didn’t know she’d bring strawberries too. There were some anxious moments on Friday as we were getting all the things together.
As much as I disliked all the hospital stays last year, finding the medicine and having it on hand for us have been a godsend. So thankful for that!
Thank you for pointing out that picture! You are good at helping me choose pics to print and save!
Yes, I like that picture a lot … the kids look so much older. Thank goodness for the doctor or team that recommended that medicine. This year will be Suh-per now having it in hand!
